PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's volleyball team defeated the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights in straight sets (25-18, 25-17,25-16) on Saturday, Sept. 12 in its second game of the 11th Annual Friar Classic in Providence, R.I. The win marks the Friars' fifth-consecutive win - all in straight sets. The last time the Friars won five-consecutive matches dates back to the 2007 season. Providence improves to 6-4 overall and Fairleigh Dickinson drops to 3-7.
The Friars took the first set, 25-18. Abigail Dix (Gibsonia, Pa.) recorded three-consecutive kills to take back the lead early in the first set. Defensive specialist Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) collected eight digs and setter Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) posted 14 assists.
The Friars won the second set, 25-17, with the help of Wiesler, who recorded four kills on four attacking opportunities. Wiesler also collected 11 of the Friars' 14 assists in the set. Dix contributed significantly to Providence's attack with four kills on five total attacks (.600).
Providence closed the third set, 25-16. Marina Rose (Coventry, Conn.) collected four kills on six total attacks for a kill percentage of .667. Wiesler added eight of the Friars' 11 assists and finished the match with seven kills on nine total attacks for an impressive .778 kill percentage. Rose and Dix each finished the match with 10 kills and Cruz totaled 13 digs.
The Friars are back in action to close the Friar Classic on Saturday, Sept. 12th at 5:00 p.m. Providence will face the Lafayette Leopards.
