PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's volleyball team defeated cross-city rival Brown in straight sets (25-16, 28-26, 26-24) on Sept. 8 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Junior Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) posted a double-double with 16 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) added 13 kills on 24 total attacks for a .417 kill percentage.
Providence improves to 4-4 on the season, including straight-set victories in each of its last three matches. Brown falls to 2-2.
Fitzgerald, Impellizeri and Marina Rose (Coventry, Conn.) combined for 13 of the Friars' 17 kills in the first set, helping Providence to a 25-16 victory. The Friars jumped out to a 14-6 lead before the Bears rallied to within two points (16-14). Providence went on to win nine of the next 11 points to take the victory.
The Friars rallied from a five-point deficit late in the second set (23-18) to defeat the Bears, 28-26. Fitzgerald and Emily Horner (Mission Viejo, Calif.) combined for four of the Friars' six kills to close out the match, in addition to service aces from Fitzgerald and Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.). Fitzgerald totaled a team-best six kills in the set, while three other Friars checked in with three kills apiece.
Providence won another thriller in the third set, 26-24. Providence led 20-18, but then fell behind, 20-23. Brown led 24-23 and was serving to win the set, but Providence tied the score, 24-24, on an attacking error by the Bears. Providence then reeled off three-straight points on a Fitzgerald kill, a Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) service ace and an Impellizeri kill. Abigail Dix (Gibsonia, Pa.) recorded three of her seven kills in the match during the third set (3-4). Dix posted a .778 hitting percentage overall (7-9).
Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) recorded 41 assists in the match for Providence, while Cruz picked up a match-high 16 digs.
The Friars return to action on Sept. 11-12 when they host the 11th Annual Friar Classic. Providence opens tournament play against Saint Peter's at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11. Prior to the Friars' match, Fairleigh Dickinson and Lafayette will play at 5 p.m. There will be a total of four matches played on Saturday, Sept. 12. Check out the full schedule.
