PROVIDENCE R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team is set to continue its BIG EAST schedule with matches against Marquette University and DePaul University. Providence will take on Marquette on Oct. 21 at 8:00 p.m. and DePaul on Oct. 22 at 8:00 p.m. There will be live stats and live stream for both matches. SCOUTING PROVIDENCE: The Providence College volleyball team has a record of 13-11 (1-7). The Friars earned their first BIG EAST win of the season with a victory against St. John's University on Oct. 16. Providence has relied on a mix of upperclassman leadership and underclassmen talent.
Providence has employed a well balanced attack this season. Sophomore Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) has been the leader of the Friars attack. Impellizeri is ranked 10th in the BIG EAST in hitting percentage (.327) and also has 197 kills (2.40 k/s), good for the second most on the team. Sophomore Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.) leads the Friars with 209 kills (2.99 k/s). Senior Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.), freshman Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.), and freshman Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) have all been essential to the attack as well, recording 184 kills (2.16 k/s), 182 kills (2.28), and 126 kills (2.33 k/s), respectively. Fitzgerald has also had great success on the serve as she is currently ranked seventh in the BIG EAST with .31 service aces per set. Setting the attack all year has been junior Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.). Clark has tallied 838 assists (9.86 a/s) this season.
The Friars' defense has been their standout quality all season. Providence is currently ranked number one in the BIG EAST for opponent hitting percentage and number three for digs. The Friars are holding opponents to a .180 hitting percentage and average 15.7 digs per set. Senior Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) has been the leader for the defense. Cruz is ranked third in the BIG EAST with a 4.85 dig per set average. Cruz's 432 total digs place her seventh in the NCAA. Impellizeri has been a force on the front line, tallying 86 total blocks. Impellizeri's 1.05 block per set average is ranked fourth in the BIG EAST.
SCOUTING MARQUETTE: The Marquette University Golden Eagles currently have a record of 17-4 (7-2). Marquette has earned its way to near the top of the BIG EAST by having both a strong attack as well as a strong defense. The Golden Eagles are number two in the BIG EAST for hitting percentage (.262) while also being ranked first in digs (16.38 d/s) and second in opponent hitting percentage (.181).
Taylor Louis and Jenna Rosenthal have been the leaders of the Marquette attack. Louis has tallied 350 kills and her 4.43 kills per set average is the second best in the BIG EAST. Rosenthal has totaled 171 kills but has the fourth best hitting percentage in the BIG EAST with .349. Setting the attack has been Sara Blasier, who has totaled 766 assists (9.82 a/s) this season.
Lauren Houg leads Marquette in digs with 387. Houg's 4.90 digs per set average is the second best in the BIG EAST. Rosenthal has also been influential defensively by recording 98 total blocks. Rosenthal's 1.24 block per set average is second best in the BIG EAST.
LAST TIME AGAINST MARQUETTE (9/25): The Friars last faced Marquette on Sept. 25 at home. The Friars dropped the contest 3-0. Marquette was led by a 14 kill effort by Taylor Louis. Sara Blasier and Lauren Houg both tallied 17 digs for the Golden Eagles.
The Friars were led by freshman Jenae Alderson and Cayla Veverka who both recorded 12 kills in the loss. Michelle Cruz led the Friars with 13 digs. Kayla Fitzgerald and Kara Mason also recorded double digit digs with 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
SCOUTING DEPAUL: The DePaul Blue Demons' currently have a record of 11-10 (5-4). Offensively, DePaul has been led by Jasmine King and Brittany Maxwell. King is ranked first in the BIG EAST with a hitting percentage of .378. Maxwell leads the Blue Demons with 307 kills and her 3.57 kills per set average is fifth in the BIG EAST. Setting the attack has been Colleen Smith with 843 assists (9.92 a/s) on the season.
Defensively, DePaul is near the bottom of the BIG EAST. DePaul is ranked eighth in opponent hitting percentage (.240) and last in digs per set (11.30). Smith and Lexi Chanos lead DePaul with 206 digs (2.42 d/s) and 196 (2.31 d/s), respectively.
LAST TIME AGAINST DEPAUL (9/23): The Friars last faced DePaul at home on Sept. 23. The match proved to be a well fought contest with DePaul taking the victory in five sets. The Blue Demons were led by a 17 kill effort by Brittany Maxwell. Caitlyn Coffey also had a strong match, tallying 11 kills. Lexi Chanos led DePaul with 12 digs. Colleen Smith recorded a double-double by tallying 41 assists and 11 digs.
Allison Impellizeri led the attack for the Friars, tallying 15 kills. Megan Onyundo was also in double digits for kills with 11. Michelle Cruz led the defense with 21 digs in the loss.
