VILLANOVA, PA. -
The women's soccer team defeated the Villanova Wildcats, 2-0, on Thursday, October 6 in Pennsylvania. The Friars improve to 9-3-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the BIG EAST. The Wildcats move to 3-9-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the BIG EAST.
Senior Hannah Wear (Westchester, N.Y.) notched her first goal of the season in the 3rd minute of the game off of a corner from sophomore Kayla Steeves (Needham, Mass.) Wear contacted off the cross with her head to redirect the ball into the back of the net, giving the Friars an early 1-0 lead.
In the 16th minute, freshman Ida DiClemente tested goalkeeper Kristyn Shea (Piscataway, N.J.) from 25 yards out with a shot just wide of the goal post.
At the half, the Wildcats led in shots six to two. Senior goalkeeper Kristyn Shea recorded two saves to Emily Harris' zero.
The Friars defeated the Wildcats, 2-0. Senior Rachel Ugolik (Hamden, Conn.) scored the second Friars' goal in the 73rd minute. Shea recorded ten saves on the match. Harris recorded one save over the course of 90 minutes.
Coach Sam Lopes stated after the match, "It was a game of two halves. We played well in the 1st half but lost our way in the 2nd. However, to still score in both halves and earn a shutout against a team that gave us everything they had in 2nd half, speaks volumes about our team. It was an important road win that presented many challenges that we can learn from and help us be better for our next match but really proud of the team's effort today."
The Friars will be back in action on Sunday, October 9 against Marquette University at 1:00 p.m. at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
