PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's volleyball squad wrapped up the 2016 campaign with a 3-0 setback (23-25, 23-25, 23-25) against Georgetown in a Big East Conference contest at Alumni on Sunday afternoon. The match was the final home game for seniors Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.), Kayla Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.), Marina Rose (Coventry, R.I.), Abigail Dix (Gibsonia, Pa.) and Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.).

Providence (13-20, 1-16 Big East) raced out to the early lead in the first set and took a 10-4 advantage on a service ace by sophomore Kara Mason (Boca Raton, FL), forcing a Georgetown (6-24, 2-15 Big East) timeout. The visiting Hoyas climbed all the way back, however and tied the first set 22-22 on a kill by sophomore Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas). Georgetown then reeled off three of the next four points for the set and capitalized on a PC hitting error to take the 25-23 lead in the set and the 1-0 advantage for the match. Fitzgerald led the way for the Friars in the set with three kills and three digs while Dix added three kills for PC. Sinnette tallied five kills, three digs and a block in the set for Georgetown while sophomore Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga.) recorded 13 assists for the Hoyas.

The second set once again had PC jump out to the early lead and the Friars capitalized on a Georgetown hitting error to take the 14-10 lead. The Hoyas again rallied and knotted the score at 17-17 on a kill by Sinnette. Georgetown led by as many as four points down the stretch in the set before taking the 25-23 victory. Fitzgerald led the way for Providence with six kills and five digs while sophomore Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) notched three kills and two blocks for the Friars. Sophomore Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill.) had six kills for Georgetown while senior Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) recorded three kills and a pair of digs in the set for the Hoyas to help the team to the 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third and final set, Georgetown had the early advantage and led 10-6 after a Providence hitting error, forcing the Friars to use a timeout. PC rallied and tied the game 19-19 on a kill by Rose. The two teams then traded points before Georgetown pulled away down the stretch to take the 25-23 win for the set, sealing the 3-0 victory for the match on a kill by Speech. Speech led the way for Georgetown in the set with six kills while McKnight notched 11 assists for the Hoyas. Freshman Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.) recorded five kills and a dig in the set for Providence.

Fitzgerald recorded a double-double for Providence with a team-high 12 kills and 12 digs while Clark added 35 assists, seven digs and four kills in the loss for the Friars.

Sinnette narrowly missed a double-double with 13 kills and nine digs for Georgetown while Speech added a match-high 15 kills and a team-best three blocks in the victory. McKnight finished with 37 assists, four digs, two service aces and two blocks for the Hoyas.
