Providence Volleyball Ready For Home Matches

Providence, R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team returns to action with matches against Xavier and Butler. Providence will face Xavier on Nov. 4 at 7:00 p.m. before taking on Butler on Nov. 6 at 1:00 p.m. The Friars are currently 13-15 (1-11) and look to improve upon their record. Live Stream vs. Xavier: Nov. 4 at 7:00 p.m. Live Stream vs. Butler: Nov. 6 at 1:00 p.m. SCOUTING PROVIDENCE: The Providence volleyball team has a record of 13-15 including a record of 1-11 in the BIG EAST. The Friars are coming off of two loses against St. John's and Seton Hall.

Providence has employed a well balanced attack this season. Sophomore Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) has been the leader of the Friars attack. Impellizeri is ranked 11th in the BIG EAST in hitting percentage (.310) and also has 209 kills (2.22 k/s). Senior Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) leads the Friars with 215 kills (2.22 k/s). Sophomore Megan Onyundo (Woodlands, Va.), freshman Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.), and freshman Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) have all been essential to the attack as well, recording 211 kills (2.67 k/s), 207 kills (2.25), and 151 kills (2.29 k/s), respectively. Setting the attack all year has been junior Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.). Clark has tallied 911 assists (9.59 a/s) this season.

The Friars' defense has been their standout quality all season. Providence is currently ranked number four in the BIG EAST for both opponent hitting percentage and digs per set. The Friars are holding opponents to a .194 hitting percentage and average 15.31 digs per set. Senior Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) has been the leader for the defense this year and is ranked third in the BIG EAST with a 4.65 dig per set average. Cruz's 470 total digs place her 25th overall in the NCAA. Impellizeri has also been a force on the front line, tallying 97 total blocks. Impellizeri's 1.03 block per set average is ranked fourth in the BIG EAST.

SCOUTING XAVIER: The Xavier volleyball team has a record of 14-11 including an 8-4 record in the BIG EAST. Xavier is currently third in the BIG EAST standings.

As a team, Xavier is ranked third in the BIG EAST for kills and fourth for hitting percentage. Xavier averages 13.91 kills per set and has a team hitting percentage of .243. The Musketeers' attack is led by Abbey Bessler and Sofia Peterson. Bessler has recorded 355 kills and her 3.74 kills per set average is fourth in the BIG EAST. Peterson has recorded 267 kills (2.81 k/s) and the second best hitting percentage in the BIG EAST with .367. Xavier has employed both Mackenzi Humm and McKena Estes as the team's setters. Humm has recorded 583 assists (6.01 a/s) and Estes 497 (5.23 a/s).

Defensively, Xavier is being led by Meredith Klare who has tallied 387 digs (3.99 d/s). Alexis Newsome has played well on the front line. Newsome has recorded 110 total blocks this season is ranked third in the BIG EAST for blocks per set with 1.16.

LAST TIME AGAINST XAVIER (10/01): The Friars and Musketeers last played on Oct. 1, with Xavier taking the victory three sets to none. The Friars' attack was led by Cayla Veverka and Megan Onyundo, as each recorded six kills. Providence had a strong match defensively as both Michelle Cruz and Kara Mason (Boca Raton, Fla.) tallied double digit digs. Cruz led the team with 16 digs while Mason had 12 digs.

Xavier was led by Abbey Bessler's nine kills. Meredith Klare recorded 17 digs in the Musketeer win.

SCOUTING BUTLER: The Butler Bulldogs have a record of 16-12 including a 5-7 record in the BIG EAST. Butler is currently seventh in the BIG EAST standings.

As a team, Butler is ranked third in the BIG EAST for assists and fourth in kills. Butler averages 12.83 assists per set and 13.67 kills per set. Butler's attack is being led by Anna Logan, how has recorded 485 kills and averages 4.45 kills per set. Logan is ranked first in the BIG EAST for kills. Whitney Beck is another important aspect of Butler's attack, recording 286 kills (2.65 k/s) this season. Setting the attack for the Bulldogs is Makayla Ferguson. Ferguson has totaled 970 assists (9.80 a/s) this season.


Taylor Takeda leads the Butler defense with 443 digs (4.06 d/s). Briana Lilly has also been strong defensively, recording 86 blocks (1.00 blks/s).

LAST TIME AGAINST BUTLER (9/30): The Friars and Bulldogs last played on Sept. 30, with Butler taking the win. Providence had a strong defensive match as four different Friars recorded double digit digs. Jenae Alderson led the team with 17 digs. Kara Mason, Kayla Fitzgerald, and Chicyia Clark recorded 13, 11 and 10 digs, respectively. Fitzgerald also recorded nine kills to lead Providence's attack.

Anna Logan and Whitney Beck led the Bulldogs with 17 and 12 kills, respectively. Taylor Takeda, Christina Porada and Makayla Ferguson all recorded double digit digs. Takeda tallied 22 digs while Porada and Ferguson each recorded 14.
