FRIARS ENTER 2018 BIG EAST TOURNAMENT 1st ROUND ACTION... The Providence College women's soccer team enters BIG EAST Tournament action against St. John's University. The Friars will travel as the No. 6 seed to Queens, N.Y. The match will be played at Belson Stadium. Providence finished the 2018 season in a three-way tie for fourth place in the standings but will be the sixth seed by virtue of tiebreaking procedures.

SCOUTING THE RED STORM... St. John's and the Friars will meet for a second time this season. The two teams battled to a double-overtime draw (0-0) in Queens, N.Y. on Oct. 4. St. John's concluded its season with a win against Xavier (1-0) on Oct. 21 and a loss against DePaul (1-0) on Oct. 25. Zsani Kajan leads the Red Storm with 24 points on 11 goals and two assists. Three other St. John's players posted double-digits in the points category, including Christina Bellero (16), Sammie Scaffidi (11) and Lucy Whipp (10).
PROVIDENCE'S HISTORY IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT... Providence College captured the BIG EAST title in 1993 and has qualified for BIG EAST Tournament play six times, since the championship began in 1993. The Friars are 4-6-2 all-time in BIG EAST Tournament action. Fifth-year Head Coach
Sam Lopes is 1-4-2 all-time at the BIG EAST Tournament. In Coach Lopes' first tie, the team advanced to the BIG EAST Championship after defeating Georgetown in PK's in 2015. In 2017, Providence advanced to the semifinal after defeating DePaul in PK's, before losing to Butler, 3-0 in the semifinal. Lopes has guided the Friars to the BIG EAST Tournament in each of his five seasons as head coach.
The Friars, who also qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 are making their fifth consecutive appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament. The only other time Providence made consecutive appearances in the BIG EAST Tournament dates back to the 1993 and 1994 seasons.
PLAYERS TO WATCH… Sophomore
Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.) leads the Friars with 10 goals and two assists, totaling 22 points on the season. McNulty ranks second in the BIG EAST in shots (76), tied for second in game-winning goals (4), tied for fourth in points (22) and third in goals (10). Forward
Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.) posts nine points on the season with four goals and one assist. Birchwell scored three game-winning goals this season including their season opening win against Hartford (2-0), home win over Brown (2-0) and crucial win over Seton Hall (1-0) in their push for the BIG EAST tournament.
Casey Estey (Kensington, N.H.) trails Birchwell with eight points on the season, followed by
Kayla Steeves (Needham, Mass.) with seven and
Alessandra Arace (Pittsfield, Mass.) with four points.
HOGAN IN NET… Goalkeeper
Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week three times this season, resulting from a career-high nine shutouts. Hogan is currently one shutout away from tying the single-season shutout record. Hogan has seen over 1,600 minutes of action and posts a 0.69 goals-against average and earned a 0.870 save percentage. Her goals-against average ranks third-best in the BIG EAST and her save percentage ranks second in the BIG EAST.
FRIARS IN CLOSE MATCHES... Ten of the Friars 18 games in the 2018 season have been decided by one goal. In BIG EAST play 6-of-9 games were decided by one goal. The Friars three draws during the season came against Arkansas (Sept. 16), St. John's (Oct. 4), and DePaul (Oct. 18)
FIVE GAME UNBEATEN STREAK… The Friars remained unbeaten over a five-game stretch from Sept. 6 through Sept. 27. Providence claimed victories over Brown (2-0), Harvard (3-1), Drexel (2-1), Villanova (2-0) and picked up a draw at Arkansas (1-1).

Katie Day (East Kingston, N.H.) earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week in the league's first set of weekly awards this season. McNulty scored one goal and tallied one assist.
Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll with back-to-back shutouts against Holy Cross (Aug. 16) and Fairleigh Dickinson (Aug. 19)

Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Hogan re- corded four saves in her third-consecutive shutout against Hartford (Aug. 23). Birchwell notched one goal and one assist in her season debut against Hartford (Aug. 23).
Sept. 3: Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) received BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after giving up a combined three goals against No. 3 North Carolina and No. 12 Duke in the Duke Nike Classic. Hogan made a combined nine saves for the tournament.

Sept. 24: Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Hogan tallied three saves on Sept. 22 in the Friars' 2-0 win over Villanova.
Oct. 8: Katie Day (East Kingston, N.H.) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal against Marquette (1-0) on Oct. 7. This marked the first goal of the season for Day and fifth of her career. Day played a critical role in controlling the defense for back-to-back shutouts that week.

Oct. 22: Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week for the third time on the season. Hogan recorded her career-best eighth shutout of the season with nine saves against DePaul.
