Callahan, O'Brien Named to U.S. National Junior Team Preliminary Roster

The 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships take place from Dec. 26 – Jan. 5 in British Columbia.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.USA Hockey unveiled its 29-player preliminary roster for the upcoming 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships in an announcement made on the NHL Network today (Dec. 5). Providence College's Michael Callahan (Franklin, Mass.) and Jay O'Brien (Hingham, Mass.) were named to the preliminary roster for the U.S. National Junior Team.
 
The 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships will take place from Dec. 26, 2018 through Jan. 5, 2019. Preliminary round games will be played at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria, B.C., while the medal round games will be played at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, B.C. The preliminary roster will participate in pre-tournament practices and exhibition games running from Dec. 15-22. The complete tournament schedule can be found here.
 
Callahan, a fifth round (142nd overall) selection of the Arizona Coyotes in the 2018 NHL Draft, has totaled a goal, four assists, 20 shots and a +6 rating while playing all 15 games on the Friars' blue line this season. Callahan notched his first collegiate goal on Oct. 19 against UConn and tallied three assists in the month of November.
 
O'Brien, the 19th overall selection in the first round of the 2018 NHL Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers, participated in the World Junior Summer Showcase back in July where he posted two goals in four games. In Providence's most recent outing, O'Brien netted his first collegiate goal which put the Friars up 2-1 with 2:32 remaining in regulation in an eventual 3-1 win at New Hampshire last Saturday night.
 
All time, the program has had 13 players appear in the World Junior Championships. Twelve have represented the United States, while current Friar Kasper Björkqvist represented Finland in 2017.
