PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's hockey team was selected to finish fifth in the Hockey East Coaches' Preseason Poll, as announced by the league on Friday, Nov. 13.
The Friars, who received 56 points, were picked to finish behind Northeastern (90), Boston University (81) and Boston College (72) and UConn (64). The Huskies, who went 21-3-3 en route to the regular season title last year, received nine first place votes. The Terriers received the other lone first place vote.
Rounding out the poll were New Hampshire (52), Maine (41), Vermont (39), Merrimack (24), and Holy Cross (21).
Providence finished last year with a 18-14-4 record, including a 15-10-2 mark in Hockey East.
Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) returns as the team's leading scorer from a year ago with 17 goals and 11 assists. Sophomore defenseman Laura DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine) finished third on the team in scoring last season with 23 points on six goals and 17 assists. In goal,
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) posted a 1.74 goals-against average and .928 save percentage in 21 games for the Friars in 2019-20.
The Friars open the 2020-21 season on the road at Merrimack on Friday, Nov. 20 before returning home to host the Warriors the following afternoon at 3 p.m.
