#9 Women’s Hockey Set For Home-and-home With Holy Cross

Puck Drop
The Friars return this weekend with a home-and-home series against the Holy Cross Crusaders. Games are set for Friday, Dec. 4 at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 5 at 3:00 p.m.

Scouting the Friars
The Friars are off to a 3-0-1 start for the season. Providence played UConn to start the season with one win and one draw and picked up its first sweep of the season over Boston College (Nov. 28). 
Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine), who was just tabbed Hockey East Player of the Week, leads the charge for the Friars with five points (three goals, two assists). She picked up one goal and one assist in Saturday's (Nov. 28) 3-2 win over Boston College. Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden). Players Chloe Gonsalves (Toronto, Ontario) and Bailey Burton (Bloomington, Minn.) follow close behind in points with three assists apiece. Freshman Claire Tyo (Massena, N.Y.) and Lindsay Bochna (Toronto, Ontario) both notched their first collegiate career goals against Boston College.

Just four games in, Providence already has fourteen different players in the line-up with at least a point. Eleven different players have posted an assist, while nine players have found the back of the net.
Senior Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) has started all four games in the net. She holds a .945 save percentage and a 1.71 goals-against average. The netminder has made 120 total saves this season.

USCHO Divison I Women's Poll-November 30th, 2020
The Friars slotted in at number nine in the USCHO NCAA Women's Hockey rankings this past Monday, November 30.

Hockey East Award Winner
Hockey East announced Monday (Nov. 30) that Providence College women's hockey team members Lauren DeBlois (Bloomington, Minn.) and Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) have been named the Hockey East Player of the Week and Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.
 
DeBlois led the team in its sweep against Boston College this weekend with two goals and one assist. She scored the game-winning goal on Saturday (Nov. 28) with 6:41 remaining in the third period. Both of DeBlois' weekend goals were scored on the power play. She now has posted three goals and two assists this season. This marks the sophomore's first-career Player of the Week honor.
 
Abstreiter was also recognized for her efforts between the pipes. She posted a combined 66 saves over the weekend. In total, Abstreiter stopped 66 out of the 70 shots she faced for a 2.00 goals-against average and a .943 save percentage. This is Abstreiter's second-consecutive week being recognized as Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week.
 
The Newcomers
The Friars welcome in eight new members to the program for the 2020-21 season - Maddy CoeneLindsay BochnaKC BrooksChloe McNeilBrooke BeckerClaire Tyo and Mireille Kingsley. Providence also welcomes in Hunter Barnett, a junior who spent the previous two seasons at RIT.

Scouting the Crusaders
The Crusaders enter the game at 1-1-0 (1-1-0 HEAW). Holy Cross opened the season with a series against the University of Maine, with one loss and one win. Last season, the team averaged 1.09 goals per game and is 8/96 on the power play and 86/108 on the penalty kill.

Who to Watch
In the 2019-20 season, junior Carlie Magier led the team offensively. She had ten points on five goals and five assists. Sophomore Mary Edmonds also led the team in goals (five) with eight points. The other Crusaders to record multiple goals is senior Antonia Matzka and sophomore Paige McArthur.

Junior Jada Brenon played 29 games in net last season. She held a 3.31 goals against average, a .914 save percentage and a 5-38-6 career record.
