No. 13 Women’s Hockey Prepares For Weekend Matchup Against No. 6 Northeastern University.

The Friars are currently 7-1-0 on the season and 4-0-0 in Hockey East play.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College No. 13 women's hockey team will take on the No. 6 Northeastern Huskies this weekend with home-and-home matchups. On Friday, Oct. 28 the Friars will host the Huskies at Schneider Arena for a 6:00 p.m. puck drop before traveling to Boston, Mass. on Saturday, Oct. 29 for a 7:00 p.m. start.
 
Scouting the Friars
The Friars are currently 7-1-0 overall and 4-0-0 in Hockey East play. The Friars are coming off another weekend sweep against the University of New Hampshire Wildcats. On Friday, Oct. 21 the Friars traveled to Durham, New Hampshire where they defeated the Wildcats, 4-1. On Saturday, Oct. 22 the Friars took a 2-1 win over New Hampshire at home.
 
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) finished the weekend with 49 saves and currently holds a .954 save percentage with a 1.00 GAA this season. Freshman Reichen Kirchmair (Oakville, Ontario) netted two goals over the weekend and is the leading scorer for the Friars with seven goals. Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) scored the game-winning goal on Saturday with two seconds left to play. Hjalmarsson leads the Friars in points with 10. Noemi Neubauerova (Prague, Czech Republic) also had a big weekend with her first goal of the season on Friday and an assist in Saturday's game. Ashley Clark (North Weymouth, Mass.) finished the weekend with two assists. 
 
USCHO Division I Women's Poll: October 24th 2022
As of Oct. 24, the Friars are slotting in at No. 13 in the USCHO NCAA Women's Hockey rankings. Providence received 82 votes. The Friars are also No. 13 in the USA Hockey Magazine Poll and received 58 votes.
 
Hockey East Award Winners
Kirchmair was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week as announced on Oct. 24. Kirchmair was recognized for earning two goals over the weekend. She has recorded seven goals and two assists across eight season games. She leads the Friars in goals and is second in points with nine.
 
Abstreiter was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Week as announced on Oct. 17. Abstreiter was recognized for having another shutout weekend against Holy Cross. She posted a combined 25 saves on the weekend and is the first goalie in program history to tally four-consecutive shutouts.
 
Abstreiter was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Week as announced on Oct. 10. Abstreiter was recognized for her efforts between the pipes after a shutout weekend over Union College and RPI, posting a combined 35 saves.
 
Reichen Kirchmair (Oakville, Ontario) was named Hockey East Pro-Ambitions Rookie of the Week as announced on Sept. 26. Kirchmair was recognized for scoring the game-winner with her first career goal against St. Lawrence.
 
Hockey East Preseason Poll
The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the Hockey East Preseason Poll, which was released on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Providence received 61 points and was picked to finish behind Northeastern (90), Vermont (79) and Boston College (76). The Huskies, who won the 2022 Hockey East Tournament, received nine first place votes.
 
Fresh Friar Faces
Providence welcomes seven new players (three transfers and four freshmen) to the roster for the 2022-23 season. Noemi Neubauerova (Prague, Czech Republic) is a graduate student from Colgate University. Ida Press (Uppsala, Sweden) is a graduate student from University of Maine. Rachel Weiss (Calgary, Alberta) is a junior from Penn State. The four freshmen are Mégane Quirion (Saint-Eustahce, Quebec), Kayla Kutes (Kirkland, Wa.), Reichen Kirchmair (Oakville, Ontario) and Cristina Cavaliere (Mississauga, Ontario).
 
Captains Named
Graduate student Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) was named captain for the 2022-23 season, along with alternate captains Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) a graduate student, senior Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine), and graduate student Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario).
 
Scouting the Huskies
Northeastern currently holds a 7-1-0 overall record with a 5-1-0 conference record. The Huskies are coming off a weekend split versus Maine with a 6-1 win on Friday, Oct. 21 and a 1-0 loss on Saturday, Oct. 22. As a team, Northeastern averages 45.6 shots per game and holds a .138 conversion rate on power plays with a 56.0 faceoff success percentage.
 
Who to Watch
Graduate student Maureen Murphy leads the Huskies in points with 12 consisting of two goals and 10 assists. Graduate student Alina Mueller and senior Katy Knoll are tied for leading goal scorer each with seven goals.
 
Senior goaltender Gwyneth Philips has started in between the pipes for every game. Philips has recorded 149 saves this season for a .968 save percentage and a .64 GAA.
 
All-Time Series with the Huskies
Providence currently leads the all-time series record against Northeastern 68-67-11. The last time the Friars faced off against Northeastern was in November 2021 when the Huskies won the first game of the series, 5-1, and tied with the Friars, 1-1, in the second.
