Last Time Out...
- Freshman Bennett Schimek scored twice and added an assist as the No. 12 Providence College men's hockey team downed No. 6 Merrimack, 6-1, in the Ledyard Classic Championship Game on Saturday (Dec. 31) in Hanover, N.H.
- Providence went to work early as Bennett Schimek forced a turnover and beat Ollas under the glove for a 1-0 lead at the 5:49 mark.
- Nick Poisson registered back-to-back goals, the second on a power play to give Providence a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.
- Parker Ford netted his second goal of the weekend with a great individual effort on the penalty kill for his seventh goal of the year.
- Matt Copponi got the Warriors on the board with a power-play goal at 18:36.
- Schimek answered with 19 seconds left in the period, tallying his second goal of the day after finishing off his own rebound.
- Cam McDonald capped off the scoring with a shorthanded empty-net goal with 5:20 left in regulation.
- Craig Needham added two assists and finished the weekend with three points on a goal and two assists.
- Max Crozier continues to lead the Friars in scoring after posting four assists on the weekend. He now has two goals and 16 assists this season.
- Providence scored three shorthanded goals on the weekend and now have six overall this season.
- Poisson has five goals over his last four games, while Schimek accumulated four goals and two assists over the last three games.
- Philip Svedebäck stopped 39-of-40 shots he faced this weekend.
- The Friars have now won back-to-back Ledyard Classic titles after winning the tournament back in 2018.

The Friars boasted 18 past, present and future players that appeared in NHL Development Camps back in July. Shorthanded Success
With three shorthanded goals last weekend, the Friars now rank second in the NCAA in that category with six shorties this season - one behind leader Ohio State.
 
Crozier and Ford Named Captains; McDonald Added To Leadership Group
The Friars anointed seniors Max Crozier and Parker Ford as the team's co-captains for the 2022-23 season. Both players were alternate captains last season. Prior to last Friday's game at Boston College, senior defenseman Cam McDonald was named an alternate captain.
 
Family Affair
Providence's Max Crozier and Merrimack's Tristan Crozier faced each other on Dec. 10 and Dec. 31. There will be two other meetings between brothers this season - Nick and Ben Poisson (Maine) from Jan. 27-28 and Grant and Aidan Porter (Princeton) on Jan. 17.
 
Schimek Earns Monthly/Weekly Accolades; Svedebäck Named Goaltender of the Week
Freshman Bennett Schimek earned Hockey East Rookie of the Month and Player of the Week accolades after recording four goals and two assists in December, with three goals and two assists coming over two games at the Ledyard Classic last weekend.

Providence ices the sixth youngest roster in the NCAA with an average age of 21.1 years and has a combined 16 first and second year players out of a 29-player roster.
 
In The Show
Eight former Friars appeared on NHL opening night rosters: Noel Acciari (STL), Jacob Bryson (BUF), Vincent Desharnais (EDM), Brandon Duhaime (MIN), Kevin Rooney (CGY), Brandon Tanev (SEA), Tyce Thompson (NJ) and Jake Walman (DET).
 
Friars at the World Junior Championships
Freshman Jaroslav Chmelar makes his second appearance in the World Junior Championships with Czechia. Through six games, Chmelar has posted three goals and two assists with a +8 rating as the team faces off against Canada in the Gold Medal Game on Thursday night.
 
Three is the Magic Number
The Friars are 202-20-21 all-time under Nate Leaman when scoring three or more goals in a game.

The Friars are 183-7-18 all-time under Nate Leaman when holding a lead after two periods.
 
Series History vs. New Hampshire (PC trails 68-92-16, .432)
The Friars and Wildcats meet for the third and final time during the 2022-23 regular season on Friday night at Schneider Arena. Providence earned a 2-2 tie and shootout win at the Whittemore Center on Oct. 28 before returning home the next night for a 3-1 win over the Wildcats. Providence is 7-2-1 over the last 10 meetings between the schools.
 
Series History vs. Army West Point (PC leads 19-7-1, .722)
The Friars and Black Knights will meet for the third time in three years on Sunday at Tate Rink. Providence is unbeaten in the last 14 meetings against Army (13-0-1), with the Black Knights last victory coming on Jan. 6, 1968. The Friars make their first visit to West Point since Dec. 20, 2013, a 4-1 victory.
