SCOUTING THE FRIARS

Providence enters Saturday's match in a three-way tie for third in the BIG EAST standings. The Friars are coming off a 1-0 win against Marquette their last time out and they are looking to keep that momentum going.

Against Marquette, senior Sam Montalto (Stonington, Conn.) found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season. The goal came when he connected on a header on a centering corner kick cross from Pearse O'Brien (West Hartford, Conn.).  Redshirt Freshman Ryan Carney (Dunstable, Mass.) earned the clean sheet in net for the Friars.

Through 12 games, the Friars have outshot opponents 154-109, which comes to an average of 12.8 shots per game. They also hold a 70-47 advantage in shots on target and hold a 72-39 advantage in corner kicks. Sam Montalto leads the team in points, registering 11. Bruno Rosa (Cascais, Portugal) is second on the team with nine points.  Ian Abbey (Elmer, N.J.) has put together a strong senior campaign, registering eight points on three goals and two assists. Freshman Angelo Ventrella (Toronto, Canada) and junior Fernando Garcia Gil (Granada, Spain) have been consistent offensive threats for the Friars, each scoring two goals in their first season with the team. Caden Stafford (Cincinnatus, N.Y.), Cameron Yriondo (Sammamish, Wash.), Vasco Teixeira (Arrentela, Portugal) and Khayr Ogunsanya (Sicklerville, N.J.) all have recorded one goal on the year. Pearse O'Brien leads the team in assists with four.

Defensively, the Friars have conceded 15 goals while holding opponents to nine shots per game. Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Ryan Carney (Dunstable, Mass.) has started every match in net this season, collecting 32 saves and a .681 save percentage. Graduate Charlie Dickerson (Norwich, England), senior Mitchel Varley (Portsmouth, N.J.), and sophomore Vasco Teixeira have anchored the back line for the Friars.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION

It was announced on Sept. 29 that senior Sam Montalto  was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Montalto registered two goals in a 1-0-1 week for the Friars, tallying the equalizer in the 90th minute in a 1-1 draw with Brown, as well as adding a goal in a 3-2 win at Xavier.

It was announced on Oct. 6 that senior Bruno Rosa  was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week. Rosa registered five points in the Friars' 5-0 win over Villanova, tallying two goals and an assist. Rosa became the first Friar to receive this recognition since Liam McSorley in 2023.

It was announced on Oct. 20 that redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ryan Carney of the Providence College men's soccer team was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Senior forward Sam Montalto was also named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. This was Carney's first BIG EAST recognition and Montalto's second of the season.

Two returners earned All-BIG EAST honors last season for the Friars. Rosa earned All-BIG EAST Second Team. Senior midfielder Diego Batista (Barcelos, Portugal) was named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team. Both Rosa and Batista were named to the 2025 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team on Aug. 19.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES

UConn comes to Providence with a strong 8-3-3 overall record, but holds the same 3-2-0 record in the BIG EAST.
