Friars will face the Hoyas in the BIG EAST Semifinals on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
NO. 4-SEED PROVIDENCE TO FACE NO. 1-SEED GEORGETOWN IN BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP SEMIFINAL ROUND... The No. 4-seed Providence College Friars will play the No. 1-seed and 11th ranked Georgetown Hoyas (10-3-4, 6-0-2 BIG EAST) in the BIG EAST Championship Semifinal Round on Thursday, Nov. 13 at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. The match will kick-off at 7:30 p.m. and stream on ESPN+.
FRIARS TIE GEORGETOWN IN SEASON FINALE TO SECURE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT SPOT… The Providence College men's soccer team tied the defending BIG EAST Champion and 11th ranked Georgetown, 2-2. on Friday, Nov. 7 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I.
The result helped secure a spot in the 2025 BIG EAST Tournament.
Freshman Angelo Ventrella (Toronto, Canada) scored both Providence goals in a come-from-behind effort. The performance marked the first multi-goal performance of Ventrella's career and his fifth goal of the season. Four of his goals have come in BIG EAST play.
Providence held a 16-6 advantage in shots, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. The Friars also led in corner kicks, 6-2.
PROVIDENCE QUALIFIES FOR ITS 25TH BIG EAST TOURNAMENT, MARKING ITS SIXTH APPEARANCE AS THE FOURTH SEED… After the team's draw with Georgetown, the Friars secured their 25th appearance in the BIG EAST Championship. Providence earned the No. 4 seed for the sixth time in program history. The last time they were seeded fourth was in 2014, when they won the program's only BIG EAST Tournament title in a 2-1 game against Xavier University. Providence is making its third-straight appearance in the seminfals and 18th appearance overall. In 2023, Providence lost to Xavier, 1-0 in the Semifinal Round. Last season the Friars defeated St. John's, 2-1 in overtime.
FRIARS VS. GEORGETOWN ALL-TIME...
Providence trails the all-time series against Georgetown, 15-25-5. The match-up marks the second-consecutive meeting between the two teams, as they faced off in the regular-season finale on Friday Nov. 7 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I.
2025 REGULAR-SEASON MEETING...
In the 2025 regular season meeting, the two teams finished in a 2-2 tie. The Hoyas jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Angelo Ventrella scored with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Friars continued their pressure in the second half, controlling 57% of possession. Ventrella scored his second goal of the match off a corner kick with an assist from Pearse O'Brien (West Hartford, Conn.).
Providence is the only BIG EAST team this season to record more than one goal against the Hoyas and only the second team to score on the Hoyas in BIG EAST play.
2024 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP GAME...
In the 2024 BIG EAST Championship game, No. 4-seed and 24th ranked Georgetown got the best of No. 2-seed and 25th ranked Providence in a 2-1 game at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. on Nov. 17, 2024.
Israel Neto scored the lone goal for the Friars to take the 1-0 lead in the first half. Georgetown scored in the first minute of the second half to make it 1-1. The Hoyas scored the game winner in the 78th minute to take the 2-1 win.
It marked Providence's seventh appearance in the BIG EAST Championship Game. The Friars are 1-6 all-time in the final with its lone title in 2014.
Lukas Burns made three saves for Providence, while Tenzing Mnske collected four saves for Georgetown.
FRIARS ADVANCED TO THE COLLEGE CUP SEMIFINAL IN 2014...
The Friars' most notable postseason run in the NCAA's came during the 2014 campaign when the squad advanced to the College Cup Semifinal. That year, Providence earned a bye in the First Round and went on to defeat Dartmouth in the Second Round (3-0), UC Irvine in the Third Round (1-0) and Michigan State in the Quarterfinals (3-2). The Friars' magical run came to an end in the semifinals against UCLA, 3-2, in double-overtime. That same year, Providence won its only BIG EAST title.
FRIARS ADVANCED TO SECOND ROUND OF 2024 NCAA TOURNAMENT...
The Friars advanced to the Second Round of the 2025 NCAA tournament after earning an at-large bid. The Friars finished as co-regular season champions in the BIG EAST East Division. The Friars then advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament final. In the First Round of the NCAA Tournament, the No. 25 Friars defeated Bucknell, 2-1 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. Aidan Davock and Israel Neto scored goals for Providence in the win.
Providence advanced to the Second Round to take on No. 7 Clemson on Nov. 25, 2024 in Clemson, S.C. The Friars were defeated, 2-0.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
The Friars enter the Semifinal Round of the 2025 BIG EAST Tournament with a record of 6-6-3 (4-2-2 BIG EAST). The Friars are 3-3-2 at home and 3-3-1 on the road.
Through 15 games, the Friars have outshot opponents, 197-139, an average of 13.1 shots per game. They also hold an 87-57 advantage in shots on target and hold an 86-53 advantage in corner kicks.
Sam Montalto (Stonington, Conn.) leads the team in points and is sitting at fifth in the BIG EAST in total points with 13. Bruno Rosa is second on the team with 11 points. Ian Abbey (Elmer, N.J.) has put together a strong senior campaign, registering nine points on three goals and three assists. Freshman Ventrella has scored five goals in his first season with the Friars, including a multi-goal performance in the regular season finale against Georgetown. Junior Fernando Garcia Gil (Granada, Spain) has been a consistent offensive threat for the Friars, registering two goals this year. Caden Stafford (Cincinnatus, N.Y.), Cameron Yriondo (Sammamish, Wash.), Vasco Teixeira (Arrentela, Portugal) and Khayr Ogunsanya (Sicklerville, N.J.) all have recorded one goal on the year. Pearse O'Brien leads the team in assists, with six, which puts him in the top five in the BIG EAST.
Defensively, the Friars have conceded 19 goals, while holding opponents to 9.3 shots per game. Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Ryan Carney (Dunstable, Mass.) has started every match in net this season, collecting 38 saves and a .667 save percentage. Graduate Charlie Dickerson (Norwich, England), senior Mitchel Varley (Portsmouth, N.J.), and sophomore Vasco Teixeira (Arrentela, Portugal) have anchored the back line for the Friars.
SLOW START...
The Friars started the 2025 season 2-5 despite out-shooting opponents 98-64 and holding a 49-19 advantage in corner kicks during that stretch. The Friars closed the season out by going 4-1-3 and 4-1-2 in BIG EAST play to earn the a spot in the program's 25th BIG EAST Tournament.
FRIARS ARE 5-1-1 WHEN SCORING TWO-OR-MORE GOALS...
Providence has posted a 5-1-1 record when scoring two-or-more goals in a game. Additionally, the Friars are 4-0 when scoring three-or-more goals. The Friars scored a season-high five goals against Villanova on Oct. 3.
OUT-SHOOTING OPPONENTS AND CLEAN PLAY...
Providence ranks third in the BIG EAST in total shot attempts with 197. Despite being in the top three in shots, Providence ranks seventh in the conference in goals scored with 23.
Providence is one of two teams in the BIG EAST that has not received a red card this season. The Friars also rank last in the BIG EAST in total fouls on the season with 177.
BALANCED ATTACK...
Nine different players on the roster have scored at least one goal, and five of those nine players are multi-goal scorers.
FRIARS HAVE PLAYED SIX OPPONENTS IN TOP 40 RPI...
Providence has registered a 0-4-2 record vs. opponents ranked in the top 40 of the current RPI rankings. All but one of the losses were decided by one goal and two of the losses were decided by penalty kick goals.
TRANSFER POWERHOUSE...
Eleven of the 23 Friar goals this season have come from transfer students. Transfers Bruno Rosa, Ian Abbey, Fernando Garcia Gil, Caden Stafford and Cameron Yriondo have all recorded goals this season.
PLAYERS TO WATCH...
Sam Montalto leads the team in scoring with 13 points on five goals and three assists. He currently sits at fifth in the BIG EAST in total points. He recorded two goals in the week of Sept. 29, including the equalizer in a 1-1 draw with Brown University in the 90th minute.
Bruno Rosa has 11 points on four goals and three assists. He currently sits in the top 10 of shots and shots on goal in the BIG EAST. Rosa registered five points against Villanova on Oct. 3. The performance earned him BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week.
Freshman Angelo Ventrella rounds out the list of Friars with double-digit points this season. Ventrella sits at 10 points with five goals including two that came in a tie with Georgetown in the regular season finale. Four of his five career goals have come in BIG EAST play.
Diego Batista (Barcelos, Portugal) has recorded one assist this season, but has played a crucial role in front of the Friars' back line. The senior center defensive midfielder controls the pace of the game for the Friars and consistently creates promising opportunities. Batista has captained the team for two seasons.
Transfers Ian Abbey and Fernando Garcia Gil have been constant offensive threats for the Friars this season. Abbey has recorded nine points on three goals and three assists. Garcia Gil has recorded six points on two goals and two assists.
Center back Charlie Dickerson has played every minute so far this season for the Friars. The transfer from Bradley earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition for his performance in a shutout tie with UConn earlier this season.
Junior midfielder Pearse O'Brien has recorded six assists for six total points this season for the Friars. O'Brien sits at fourth in the BIG EAST in total assists this season.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ryan Carney has started all 15 games for the Friars this season. He has recorded four shutouts. He earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors for his clean sheet performance against Marquette.
CRAIG STEWART COACHED IN HIS 300TH CAREER GAME...
Craig Stewart is in the midst of his 14th-year at Providence College and coached in his 300th career game last season against Villanova on Oct. 26, 2024. Stewart has a career record as a head coach of 184-96-42. He has brought nine teams to NCAA Tournament appearances.
SCOUTING GEORGETOWN
Georgetown claimed the No. 1-seed in the BIG EAST Championship after finishing 10-3-4 overall and 6-0-2 in the BIG EAST. Georgetown is currently ranked 11th in the United Socceer Coaches poll. The Hoyas are 4-1-1 in the last six match-ups against Providence.
The Hoyas are 4-0-1 in their last five outings. They have outscored opponents 15-3 in those games. Georgetown began its 2025 season 0-2 before going 10-1-4 in their final 15 games.
Zach Zengue leads the Hoyas with 35 points on 13 goals and nine assists. He ranks first in goals, assists and total points in the BIG EAST. Zengue's 35 points puts him at third in the country for total points. Baker Mitchell is second in scoring with 20 points on nine goals and two assists. Matthew Van Horn owns 10 points on two goals and six assists.
Captain Tenzing Manske has played 1,395 minutes in goal for Georgetown. He has registered a 0.84 goals against average and a 0.723 save percentage. He has been the goalkeeper of record in 16 matches (9-3-1) and has posted eight shutouts. Georgetown has allowed only three goals in BIG EAST play. One came in a 4-1 win against UConn and two came in a 2-2 tie at Providence.
