Friars Use Strong Fourth-Quarter Effort To Defeat Xavier, 61-53

CINCINNATI, OHIO – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Xavier, 61-53, on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Friars used a strong fourth-quarter effort to secure the victory, outscoring the Musketeers 23-12 in the final 10 minutes. Providence improved to 11-16 (4-10 BIG EAST), while Xavier dropped to 6-19 overall (1-13 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence held a 6-4 lead at the first media timeout (4:25).
• The Friars were scoreless the final 3:53 of the quarter as Xavier recorded five-unanswered points to take an 11-8 lead at the intermission.
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence tied the game, 16-16, with 5:27 remaining in the quarter as Olivia Olsen converted a lay-up with one-second on the shot clock.
• Brynn Farrell scored six-straight points for Providence during a span of 1:08 to give the Friars a 22-18 lead with 3:45 to play.
• Xavier halted a scoring drought of 2:31 with a three from the top of the key and followed with a pair of free throws to take back the lead (23-22) with 1:35 left.
• Olsen closed the quarter with back-to-back buckets to take a 26-23 lead into halftime.
• Olsen and Farrell each scored eight points in the first half. Olsen added six rebounds.
• As a team, Providence had nine assists on 11 field goals in the first half. Marta Morales Romero recorded four.
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence grabbed a 31-25 lead, marking its largest lead of the game, but followed with four-straight turnovers. Xavier capitalized with a 10-0 run to claim a 35-31 lead.
• Farrell halted the run with an offensive board and put-back out of the timeout.
• Xavier outscored Providence 18-12 overall in the quarter and held a 41-38 lead at the intermission.
4TH QUARTER:
• Sophi Hall drilled a three from the left wing to give Providence a 46-45 lead.
• Providence led 48-47 at the media timeout (4:30) as both teams scored on their next offensive possessions.
• The Friars used an 8-0 run to claim a 56-50 lead and Xavier was forced to use a timeout with 52-seconds left in the game. The six-point advantage tied the Friars' largest lead of the game.
• Xavier hit 1-2 free throws with 38-seconds left to make it a 56-51 game and Providence called timeout to advance the ball.
• Grace Efosa was fouled after the ensuing inbounds play and hit 1-2 free throws to put Providence back ahead by six (57-51).
• Xavier cut the deficit to four (57-53) on a strong take by Meri Kanerva.
• Providence called timeout to advance the ball, but turned it over, giving Xavier a chance to inch closer.
• The Friars got a defensive stop and called their final timeout to advance the ball with 13-seconds left.
• Olsen hit a pair of free throws to give Providence a 59-53 edge with 11-seconds on the clock.
• Olsen stole the ball on Xavier's inbound play and Morales Romero sealed the game with two free throws (61-53).
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:

• Farrell notched 12 points on 4-7 shooting. She matched her season-high in assists (five) and her career high in steals (four).

• Providence swept the season series against Xavier and has won six-straight games against the Musketeers.

• The Friars return to action on Sunday, Feb. 16 against Seton Hall. The game will be played at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to tip-off at 2:00 p.m. At halftime, the College will honor former Friar great Britt King '86 and former women's basketball head coach, the late Bob Foley. King and Foley along with former men's basketball player Billy Donovan '87 will have their "jerseys" retired as part of the Friar Legends Forever Tradition.
