Women’s Track Competes On Final Day At NCAA First Round

Shannon Flockhart and Kimberley May advance to the 1,500-meter semifinals, Maeve O’Neill advances to the 800 semifinals and Alex Millard advances to the finals in the 5,000 meters at NCAA Track Championship on June 11-14.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Providence College Friars competed in the final day of action at the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field East Preliminary competition on Saturday, May 31 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla.
Graduate student Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) and senior Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand) both competed in the quarterfinal round of the 1,500 meters. Flockhart finished first overall as she set a program and facility record when she finished the 1,500 in a time of 4:04.97. Her time was the fourth best in collegiate history. May placed fourth overall and fourth in her heat in a personal best time of 4:06.31.

Flockhart and May will both advance to the 1,500-meter semifinals (they qualified automatically), which will be at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 11-14. A total of 12 athletes of the 24 that competed advanced (top five from each heat plus the next two fastest times) from Saturday's quarterfinal round to the semifinals.
Graduate student Alex Millard (Kent, England) ran in the 5,000 meters. She placed eighth overall and fifth in her heat in a time of 15:28.91 to advance to the finals in Eugene as she qualified automatically. A total of 12 athletes of the 48 that competed advanced (top five from each heat plus the next two fastest times) from Saturday's quarterfinal round to the finals.

Sophomore Maeve O'Neill (Cork, Ireland) competed in the 800 meters semifinals. O'Neill ran a time of 2:03.44 and finished third in her heat and qualified automatically for the semifinals, which will be held at the NCAA Championships. A total of 12 of the 24 athletes who ran the event advance to the semifinals.

Also scheduled to compete for the Friars is graduate student Alex Millard (Kent, England), who will toe the line in the 5,000 meters finals on Saturday, June 14 at 10:55 p.m. ET.
