PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The USTFCCCA announced today (Aug. 26) the preseason national rankings for Division I Cross Country. The Providence College women's cross country team is ranked seventh nationally. The Friar women's team is just one of two BIG EAST teams ranked nationally and the only BIG EAST squad in the top 10.
The announcement of national rankings follows yesterday's release of the organization's regional rankings. The Friar women are ranked first in the Northeast Region.
This year, the Friar women's team will be led by senior
Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland) and sophomore
Anna Gardiner (Downpatrick, Northern Ireland). Laverty placed 20th (21:05.3) at the 2024 BIG EAST Cross Country Championship as well as a 40th (20:55.59) place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regionals that fall. Laverty went on to compete at the 2024 NCAA Cross Country Championship and finished in a time of 21:10.6. Sophomore
Anna Gardiner finished 27th (21:43.1) at the 2024 BIG EAST Cross Country Championship and was the fifth scorer for the Friars at the NCAA Cross Country Championship in a time of 20:43.1 to help the Friars secure a third-place finish.
The Friars open the 2025 season on Friday, Sept. 5 at the Friar Invitational. The meet will take place at the Mark Coogan Cross Country Course at Highland Park in Attleboro, Mass. The women's race will begin at 3:15 p.m. and the men's race will follow at 4:00 p.m.
