CHICAGO, Ill.- The Providence College men's basketball team defeated the DePaul University Blue Demons (14-13, 6-10 BIG EAST), 71-68, on Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill. With the win, Providence improved to 12-15 overall and 5-11 in BIG EAST play.
Jaylin Sellers (Columbus, Ga.) scored a game-high 21 points and added six rebounds.
Jason Edwards (Atlanta, Ga.) registered 17 points, four rebounds and six assists. The Friars shot 51 percent from field (25-49), including 50 percent (8-16) from three to pace the Friars.
FIRST HALF:
• DePaul controlled the opening tip and scored in the paint on its first possession. Providence followed as
Oswin Erhunmwunse (Benin City, Nigeria) slammed home a dunk.
Stefan Vaaks (Tabasalu, Estonia) added a three-pointer as the game was tied at five (18:21).
• Out of the first media timeout, Erhunmwunse scored a putback, and Vaaks sank another three as the Friars extended the scoring streak to 10-0 and took a 12-5 lead (14:23).
• DePaul found a rhythm on offense and cut into the Providence lead.
Jaylin Sellers (Columbus, Ga.) responded with 10 straight points for the Friars, including a pair of threes, as Providence held a 23-16 lead (8:32).
• Both teams escalated the offensive pace as DePaul chipped away at the Providence lead.
Jason Edwards (Atlanta, Ga.) responded with a three and followed with a bucket. Providence led 30-24 (5:33).
• As the teams continued to trade buckets,
Jamier Jones (Sarasota, Fla.) got in the paint and scored. Sellers followed with another basket in the paint and gave Providence its largest lead at 34-29 (4:38).
• DePaul knocked down a three to cut the Providence lead to two. Edwards got downhill and scored a layup that gave the Friars a 38-35 lead with 25 seconds remaining in the first half.
• Providence led at the half, 38-35.
• Providence shot 16-31 (51.6%) from the field, 5-9 (55.6%) from three, and 1-4 (25.0%) from the free-throw line.
• DePaul shot 14-29 (48.3%) from the field, 4-10 (40.0%) from three, and 3-4 (75.0%) from the free-throw line.
• Sellers led all scorers with 14 first-half points and added four rebounds.
• DePaul's N.J. Benson added nine points for the Blue Demons in the first half.
• The Friars held the advantage on the glass, 17-11.
• Providence outscored DePaul in the paint by a margin of 18-12.
SECOND HALF:
• DePaul opened the second half with an and-one that tied the game at 38. On its next trip down the floor, DePaul knocked down a three and took its first lead since the opening possession in the first half (19:38).
• The Blue Demons knocked down a three and extended their early second-half scoring run to 11-1. DePaul took a 46-39 lead and forced a Providence timeout (17:30).
• Jones grabbed a rebound and took it the length of the floor for a spin move dunk as Providence trailed 46-43 (16:23).
• Sellers sank his third three-pointer of the game and cut the deficit to one. On the next trip down the floor, Erhunmwunse grabbed an offensive rebound, and Vaaks knocked down his third three as the Friars regained a 53-51 lead (11:47).
• Sellers slammed an emphatic dunk and gave the Friars a 62-58 lead. Sellers eclipsed the 20-point mark with the jam at the rim (6:10).
• The teams picked up the defensive intensity following a DePaul timeout. Edwards got downhill and scored a layup as Providence led 69-64 (4:24).
• Vaaks sank his fourth three-pointer of the game and gave the Friars a 69-64 (2:54) lead.
• Both teams stalled on the offensive end down the stretch. DePaul sank a pair of free throws and cut the Providence lead to 69-68 with 54 seconds remaining.
• The Friars held onto a three-point lead to earn a 71-68 victory.
HIGHLIGHTS:
• Providence shot 25-49 (51.0%) from the field, 8-16 (50.0%) from three, and 13-21 (61.9%) from the free-throw line.
• DePaul shot 25-65 (38.5%) from the field, 6-26 (23.1%) from three, and 12-24 (50.0%) from the free-throw line.
• Four players finished in double figures for the Friars: Sellers (21), Edwards (17), Vaaks (14) and Jones (11).
• Sellers scored 21 points on three made three-pointers. It marked his ninth game this season with 20 or more points.
• Erhunmwunse tallied 12 rebounds. The sophomore has now recorded 10 or more rebounds in eight of the last 10 games.
• DePaul's N.J. Benson scored a team-high 19 points.
• Providence outrebounded DePaul by a margin of 41-31.
• The Friars scored 18 second-chance points on 11 offensive rebounds.
