NEWARK, N.J. - The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the Seton Hall University Pirates (17-8, 7-7 BIG EAST), 87-80, on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at The Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. With the win, Providence fell to 11-14 overall and 4-10 in BIG EAST play. Graduate student Jaylin Sellers (Columbus, Ga.) led the Friars with 23 points. Stefan Vaaks (Tabasalu, Estonia) added 20 points.  

FIRST HALF: 

• Providence got on the board first, when Corey Floyd Jr. (Franklin, N.J.) got out in transition and converted on a layup to give the Friars the early 2-0 lead. On the following possession, Floyd Jr. knocked down an open three-pointer to make it 5-2, Providence (17:40). 

• Duncan Powell (Dallas, Texas) got going early, drilling a three-pointer to build the lead. On the next possession, Jaylin Sellers (Columbus, Ga.) followed with another triple to push the advantage to 11-6 heading into the first media timeout (15:54). 

• Out of the timeout, Providence knocked down its fourth three of the game when Stefan Vaaks (Tabasalu, Estonia) knocked down a three to make it 14-8 (15:48). 

• Jason Edwards (Atlanta, Ga.) banked in another Friar three, to make them 5-6 from deep on the night. 17-11, Providence (14:31).  

• Providence kept up its hot shooting when Sellers sunk his second three of the night. On the very next possession, Ryan Mela (Natick, Mass.) notched his first basket with a strong drive, pushing the score to 22–14 for Providence (12:10). 

• Edwards drove into the lane and hit a contested floater, and on the following possession, Cole Hargrove (Norristown, Pa.) opened his scoring with a two-handed dunk that gave Providence a 26-19 lead (10:30). 

• Vaaks stepped in to a deep three-pointer to make it 29-24, Providence heading into the under eight-minute media timeout (7:39). 

• Mela gathered his own miss and was able to tip it back in for two to make it 33-29 after a pair of Edwards free throws (6:05). 

• Nilivan Daniels (St. Louis, Mo.) came off the bench and buried a three-pointer to keep Providence in front, making it 36-32 (5:45). 

• Sellers connected on his third three-pointer of the first half to improve Providence's three-point shooting to 9-14. 39-34, Providence (3:01). 

• Sellers found Edwards ahead of the pack for an easy layup in transition to make it 41-37, Providence with under a minute remaining in the half.  

• On the last possession of the half, Powell was fouled on a three-point attempt and knocked down two of the three shots to make it 43-39 Providence with two seconds remaining.  

• Providence led at the half, 43-39. 

• Providence shot 15-27 (55.6%) from the field, 9-17 (52.9%) from three, and 4-5 (80.0%) from the free-throw line.   

• Seton Hall shot 14-32 (43.8%) from the field, 4-10 (40.0%) from three, and 7-9 (77.8%) from the free-throw line.    

• The Friars finished the first half with eight different players entering the scoring column. 

• Sellers and Edwards led the Friars each with nine points.  

• The Friars held the advantage on the glass, 18-14.  

• The Friars knocked down nine three-pointers in the first half, marking the second most in a half this season.  

SECOND HALF: 

• Vaaks opened the second half with a second chance three-pointer and extended Providence's lead to 46-39 (19:22).  

• Vaaks knocked down his fourth three of the game to stop a Seton Hall run as the Friars led 49-43 (17:46).  

• The Pirates picked up the defensive intensity, limiting the Friars to only two field goals over a five-minute stretch. Seton Hall took its first lead of the night at 57-55 forcing a Providence timeout (12:15). 

• Sellers got into the lane and scored a layup to cut the Seton Hall lead to one. Out of a timeout, Sellers swatted a Pirates transition dunk and sank a three on the offensive end as Providence trailed 65-63 (8:18).  

• Seton Hall continued to respond as they pushed the lead out to eight for their largest lead of the night. Sellers got back to the free-throw line and sank two as the Friars trailed 73-66 (5:05).  

• Powell converted an and-one opportunity and cut the Pirates lead to five. Seton Hall found another response with a three-pointer and extended its lead to 78-79 (3:06).  

• Sellers sank a step-back three as the Friars trailed by six. Vaaks sank another three as the Pirates led 82-78 with 1:18 remaining in the game.  

• Floyd grabbed a rebound and made a putback layup to bring the Friars within four at 84-80 with 39 seconds left. Seton Hall led 87-80 as time expired.  

HIGHLIGHTS: 

• Providence shot 25-51 (49.0%) from the field, 14-34 (41.2%) from three, and 16-17 (94.1%) from the free-throw line.   

• Seton Hall shot 31-61 (50.8%) from the field, 6-16 (37.5%) from three, and 19-25 (76.0%) from the free-throw line.    

• Three players finished in double figures for the Friars: Sellers (23), Vaaks (20) and Edwards (11). 

• Sellers scored a game-high 23 points on five made three-pointers. It marked his eighth game this season with 20 or more points in just 18 games played.  

• Vaaks scored 20 points on five made three-pointers. It marked his fifth game this season with 20 or more points.  

• The Friars made a season-high 16 three-pointers.  

• Adam Clark scored a game-high 31 points for Seton Hall.  

• The Friars won the rebound battle, 34-26.
