CHICAGO, Ill. – The Providence College men's and women's track teams competed on the first day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Friday, Feb. 27 at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Track and Field Facility in Chicago, Ill.

The woman's DMR team was composed of sophomores
Emily Bush (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.),
Keira Kelly (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and freshmen
Kate Currie (Christchurch, New Zealand) and
Gemma Galvin (Clare, Ireland). They earned All-BIG EAST honors as they placed second in a time of 11:23.05.
Leading on the women's side was sophomore
Gabrielle Schmidt (Brisbane, Australia), who placed fourth in the 5,000 meter finals (16:37.87). She was followed by senior
Jane Buckley (Cork, Ireland), who was sixth (16:46.25), and senior Niamh O'Mahony (Kerry, Ireland), who finished ninth in a time of 17:25.15.
In the 800 meter prelims, junior
Maeve O'Neill (Cork, Ireland.) finished in a time of 2:12.23. She was followed up by teammate
Kiera Hall (Christchurch, New Zealand) (2:12.79). Both runners qualified for the 800 meter finals, which will be run on Saturday.
Senior
Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland) ran the mile prelims (4:47.71) and qualified for Saturday's finals.
In the 400-meter trials, sophomore
Chloe Higgins (Morristown, N.J) was the top Friar finisher in a time of 56.00 and qualifying for the finals on Saturday.
In the 60-meter hurdles prelims, senior
Charlotte Cousins (Madbury, N.H.) placed ninth (9.22) and was one spot out of qualifying for the finals on Saturday.
The Friar men were led by the DMR team of freshman
Oliver Neate (Sydney, Australia), senior
Kyle Bloomer (Darien, Conn.), freshman
Matt McCabe (Marshfield, Mass.) and sophomore Elliot Pugh (Tauranga, New Zealand). They placed second in a time of 9:47.09 and earned All-BIG EAST accolades.
Also on the men's side, junior
Tyler Bartlett (Fairfield, Conn.) (4:10.35), senior
Zane Powell (Auckland, New Zealand) (4:15.36) and freshman
Jack Dowd (Pearl River, N.Y.) (4:10.40) each competed in the mile prelims and qualified for Saturday's finals.
Sophomore Tom Breen (Providence, R.I.) ran the 800 meter trials (1:52.33) and qualified for the finals on Saturday.
