PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's soccer team defeated Sacred Heart, 4-1, in its season-opener on Thursday (Aug. 20) on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. Providence got goals from
Sam Montalto (Stonington, Conn.),
Alvaro Maneiro (Madrid, Spain),
Fernando Garcia Gil (Granada, Spain) and
David Casado (Alicante, Spain) in the victory over the Pioneers.

• The Friars jumped out to an early lead in the 5
th minute as
Sam Montalto cleaned up a rebound from
Cameron Yriondo (Sammamish, Wash.) for his first goal of the season.
• Providence extended the lead to 2-0 as newcomer
Alvaro Maneiro (Madrid, Spain) finished off a highlight-reel feed from
Angelo Ventrella (Toronto, Ont.).
• Sacred Heart got on the board with 24 seconds remaining in the first half on goal from Danny Istambouli off a free kick.
• The Friars held a 7-6 advantage in shots in the opening half, while
Ryan Carney (Dunstable, Mass.) made three saves for Providence.
• Providence took control in the 64
th and 66
th minutes with back-to-back goals to take a 4-1 lead.
• Fernarndo Garcia Gil fired a deflected shot into the back of the net for his third career goal as a Friar with assists from Maneiro and Casado.
• Casado followed up with a header off a cross from Ventrella for his first collegiate goal to extend the Providence lead to 4-1.
• The four goals were the most scored by the Friars in a season-opener opening the 2020-21 season with a 4-0 win over Rhode Island.
• The Friars improved to 8-0-0 all-time against Sacred Heart with the win.
