Providence, R.I. - Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Katinger (Stratford, Conn.) recorded a match high 23 kills to help lead the Providence College volleyball team to a 3-2 win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in BIG EAST action Sunday afternoon in Alumni Hall.
After winning the first game, 16-14, the Friars dropped two in a row by 15-11 and 15-2 margins. With their backs to the wall, Providence rallied with a 15-1 win and then won the final game of the afternoon, 15-11.
The Friars have now won five in a row and nine of their last 11 to improve to 11-9 on the season and 4-2 in BIG EAST play. Rutgers falls to 11-12 overall and the Scarlet Knights are tied with the Friars at 4-2 in the league.
Katinger led the Friars with 23 kills while making just eight errors in 66 attempts for a .227 hitting mark. Annie Cella (So., Burr Ridge, Ill.) had 16 kills and Heidi Filippi (Jr., Wooster, Ohio) added 11 on the afternoon.
Rutgers was led by senior Lola Opardiran (Brampton, Ont.) who had 20 kills with just two errors in 60 attempts. Kera Carter and Cheri Drake also had double figure kills with 13 and 10 respectively.
The Friars return to action on Tuesday, October 26th when they host Harvard in a non-league contest at 7:30 p.m.
