Providence, R.I. - The Notre Dame Fighting Irish volleyball team entered Sunday's match with Providence undefeated in BIG EAST play and hadn't lost a single game all season in the league. PC gave the Irish all they could handle though losing in five games, 3-2, at Alumni Hall.
Providence won the first game, 15-12, fell in the second, 15-10 and then won the third, 15-8 to take a 2-1 lead. Notre Dame bounced back with a 15-8 win in the fourth game and held off the Friars 15-12 in the final game to improve to 8-0 in the BIG EAST and 14-6 on the season.
PC saw its seven game winning streak snapped with the loss as the Friars are now 13-10 overall and 5-3 in the BIG EAST and right in the thick of the fight for a spot in the league tournament November 19-21 at Pittsburgh.
The Friars were led by Annie Cella (So., Burr Ridge, Ill.) who had 26 kills and 13 digs while recording a team best .373 hitting percentage. Fellow sophomore Sarah Katinger (Stratford, Conn.) added 25 kills and had a .317 hitting mark for the game.
Heidi Filippi (Jr., Wooster, Ohio) added 14 kills on the afternoon and Colleen Lee (Sr., Tonawanda, N.Y.) added to her school record for assists with 73 on the afternoon and a team-best 15 digs. For her career, Lee now has 3,701 assists in her four years at Providence.
Notre Dame was led by senior Mary Leffers who was one of four Fighting Irish players in double figures with 18 kills. She had a .385 hitting percentage for the day.
The loss to Notre Dame means that PC now has won 11 of its last 14 games with four more remaining. The Friars travel to Boston College on Friday, November 6th for an 8:00 p.m. match with the Eagles. They then play a non-league contest at Brown on Sunday, November 7th at 4:00 p.m.
