MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Providence College volleyball team closed out the regular season with an impressive 3-0 win over the West Virginia Mountaineers Sunday afternoon in Morgantown.
The Friars won their three games by 15-10, 15-11 and 15-8 scores to close the regular season with a 16-11 overall record and an 8-3 record in BIG EAST play. The Friars now advance to the BIG EAST Tournament which will be held at the University of Pittsburgh from Friday, November 19th through the 21st.
PC made short work of the Mountaineers with sophomores Sarah Katinger (Stratford, Conn.) and Annie Cella (Burr Ridge, Ill.) leading the way. Katinger had ten kills along with 17 defensive digs while Cella had a game best 13 kills on the afternoon. Katinger's .273 hitting mark led the Friars.
Senior setter Colleen Lee (Tonawanda, N.Y.) had a game high 31 assists and added two more service aces to her school record.
The Mountaineers were led by senior Megan Porter who had seven kills and made just one error in 16 attempts for a .375 hitting percentage. West Virginia closes the regular season with a 12-16 record and were 4-7 in league play.
PC moves onto the tournament as one of the hottest teams in the conference. After starting the season with a 2-7 record, the Friars were 14-4 the rest of the way, including 7-1 in their final eight BIG EAST contests.
Tournament pairings will be announced on Monday, November 15th.
