PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence's Doug Sheppard notched the game-winning goal during a power play with 2:42 remaining in the third period to give the Providence College Friars a 3-2 victory over Cornell in men's hockey action on Tuesday, November 23 at PC's Schneider Arena.
The Friars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Devin Rask at 8:01 and Fernando Pisani on the power play at 11:44. Rask put the Friars up 1-0 when he one timed a pass from across the goal mouth. Pisani moved in from the point and wristed a low shot that beat Cornell goaltender Ian Burt. The Big Red cut into the Friar lead with 3:33 remaining in the first period when Mike Rutter wristed a loose puck high into the net past a sprawling PC netminder Boyd Ballard.
After a scoreless second period, Cornell's Doug Stienstra backhanded home a shot from three feet in front of the net during a five-on-three power play at 9:06 of the third period. However, Sheppard gave the Friars the victory by deflecting a blast from Jason Ialongo at the right point past Burt at 17:18.
Ballard recorded a season high 40 stops in the win for PC. Burt made 26 save for Cornell
With the win, Providence raised its record to 5-6 overall, while Cornell fell to 4-3.
