Troy Lake put the Friars on the scoreboard when he wristed in a shot from three feet in front of the net at 1:27 of the first period. The Minutemen wasted little time tying the game. Jeff Turner intercepted a clearing pass and rifled a low shot through PC goaltender Mark Kane's five hole at the 1:45 mark of the first period.
In a tight checking second period, PC tallied the only goal to take a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes of play. Jon Cameron fired a pass from the left corner which Marc Suderman defelected to J.J. Picinic who one timed a shot past UMass netminder Markus Helanen at 10:48.
The Friars took a 3-1 lead in the third period when Mike Farrell blasted a slap shot from the left point on a power-play at 8:51. UMass made the game interesting in the final two minutes of the game when Randy Drohan fired in a wrist shot through a screen which found the back of the net at 18:38. However, PC's defense withstood the UMass surge to win, 3-2.
