STORRS, Conn. (AP) - On a night to honor graduating seniors, sophomore Svetlana Abrosimova stole the show.
Abrosimova scored 23 points Wednesday night to lead No. 6 Connecticut to an 88-53 win against Providence.
The 6-foot-2 forward from St. Petersburg, Russia, also continued her assault on the school record books. Abrosimova became the first UConn sophomore to reach 1,000 points. She reached that mark with a 10-foot jumper with 14:56 remaining in the second half. Her 23 points was a game high.
Abrosimova, the preseason Big East Player of the Year, had four points in the Huskies' opening 6-0 run. UConn (22-4, 15-1 Big East) never trailed and used a stifling defense to keep the Friars off the scoreboard for the first three minutes of the game.
UConn had runs of 17-7 and 18-6 to build a 47-21 lead at the break. The second half was more of the same. Abrosimova had eight points in 10-4 run early in the second half. UConn led by as many as 38.
Providence (4-20, 3-13) couldn't keep pace with UConn's uptempo game in the open court and fared no better inside. UConn had a 47-30 advantage on the boards, led by Kelly Schumacher's nine rebounds.
Schumacher also had 18 points. Shea Ralph chipped in with 15 for UConn.
Dana Simonelli led Providence with 14 points. Monika Roberts added 11.
The Huskies lead the series 24-21 and have won the last 12 straight games.
