AMHERST, Mass. -- UMass-Amherst defeated Providence College, 2-1, in HOCKEY EAST action at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass., on Friday, January 7.
In a tightly played first 20 minutes of action, the Friars held a 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman Shawn Weiman in the closing minutes of the period. Weiman blasted a high slap shot from the blueline that deflected off UMass goaltender Markus Helanen and into the net at the 18:44 mark.
UMass came out flying in the second period and tied the game just 1:51 into the period. Nathan Sell broke down the right wing and sent a centering pass to Joey Culgin who redirected a shot past Friar netminder Nolan Schaefer for the only goal of the second period. The Friars had an excellent opportunity to take the lead when Nick Stephens was whistled for interference at 14:31 of the second that created a four-on-three situation for the Friars. PC controlled the puck and peppered Helanen with six shots on the power play, but the Friars were not able to score.
The Minutemen got their first lead of the game at 5:41 of the third period when Brad Nizantowski picked off a clearing pass from the Providence zone and fired a low shot under Schaefer for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
With the win, UMass raised its record to 7-9-2 overall and 1-6-1 in HOCKEY EAST, while Providence fell to 11-8 overall and 3-6 in league action.
