PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars were defeated by cross-town rival Brown University, 2-0, in women's soccer action on Wednesday October 18 at Providence, R.I.
Brown took a 1-0 advantage at the 39:53 mark when junior forward Kim Lanzire (Bristol, R.I.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal. Lazire accepted a pass from freshman midfielder Molly Cahan (Encino, Calif.) and shot a low ball inside the post to beat Friar freshman goalkeeper Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.).
The Bears added an insurance goal when sophomore forward Caitlin Carey (Boxford, Mass.) converted on a partial breakaway. Carey's goal at the 79:49 was the result of a Laura Iden (Kenilworth, N.J) pass that sent her streaking down the right side of the field.
Providence had numerous scoring chances in the second half but were unable to muster any production as the Bears took the 2-0 decision.
In goal, junior Mary Jo Markle (West Chester, Pa.) and freshman Sarah Gervais (Harrisville, R.I.) combined to stop five shots. Providence's Haines recorded nine saves.
With the win, Brown's record moved to 10-2-0 overall, while Providence's record fell to 5-10-1 overall following the defeat.
The Friars return to action on Sunday, October 22 when they host West Virginia at 1:00 p.m. at PC's Glay Field.
