PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The 15th-ranked Providence College Friars skated to a 4-4 tie with the 11th-ranked Boston University Terriers in the HOCKEY EAST opener for both teams on Saturday, October 28, 2000 at PC's Schneider Arena.
The Friars came out of the gates flying as they scored two first period goals. Sophomore Jon DiSalvatore opened the scoring at the 8:23 mark on a slap shot from the blue line assisted by Shawn Weiman and Doug Wright. Seven minutes later Adam Lee notched his first goal of the season, extending the Friar lead to 2-0. BU's Brian Collins cut the Friar lead in half with a power-play goal with 2:34 remaining in the first period.
The Terrier special teams took over in the first five minutes of the second period as Carl Corazzini netted a short-handed tally at 2:40 and Jack Baker one-timed a shot past Friar netminder Boyd Ballard on a power play at the 4:33 mark to give BU a 3-2 lead. The Terriers were carrying the play and were threatening to take over the game when the Friars broke up a Terrier clearing pass. J.J. Picinic took a pass from Marc Suderman and wristed a high shot past BU goaltender Jason Tapp at 8:34 of the second period to even the game at 3-3.
The game remained tied at 3-3 until Gregg Johnson fired a low shot past Ballard to give BU the lead with 3:14 remaining in the game. The goal brought the Friars to life and the team pressured the Terriers. After missing on several opportunities, Devin Rask tipped a blast from Matt Libby through Tapp to tie the game with 1:33 remaining in regulation.
Both teams had several chances to score in overtime but the defense held in the extra period.
Ballard recorded 32 saves in the tie. Tapp stopped 31 shots for the Terriers.
With the tie, the Friars' record moved to 2-0-1 overall and 0-0-1 in HOCKEY EAST action, while the Terriers' record changed to 1-1-1 overall, 0-0-1 in league play.
Providence College will return to action on Sunday, October 29 versus Union College at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
