PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars defeated the Acadia Axemen, 4-2, in men's college hockey exhibition action on Saturday, October 7 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.
The Axemen opened the scoring at the 9:05 mark of the second period on a Joshua St. Louis goal. The Friars' Devin Rask got PC's started when he converted a two-on-one breakaway, on a pass from Jon DiSalvatore, with two minutes remaining in the second period.
Acadia added one more goal in the third period, before the Friars exploded with three unanswered goals. Senior J.J. Picinic started the Friars' third period scoring, beating Acadia's Mike Lencucha on a slap shot from the front of the goal, tying the game at two. Freshman Dominic Torretti and Peter Zingoni assisted on the play.
At 10:32 of the third, Acadia's Shane Regan was called for tripping which led to a power play goal from DiSalvatore, the eventual game winner, assisted by Peter Fregoe and Rask. Zingoni added an empty net goal at 19:14 to secure the 4-2 win for the Friars.
Nolan Schaefer earned the win for Providence after making 10 stops in 30:05 minutes of play. Boyd Ballard also recorded 10 saves for the Friars. Lencucha saved 41 shots in the loss.
Providence College will return to action in their 2000-01 regular season opener on October 20 versus Miami at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
