Providence, R.I.... --The eighth-ranked Providence College Friars defeated the Niagara Purple Eagles, 4-2 in women's hockey action, on February 12, at Niagara's Dwyer Arena.
Niagara's Candace Ceelen started the scoring at the 5:27 mark of the first period, giving the Purple Eagles a early 1-0 lead. The Friars responded, scoring four unanswered goals, before Niagara added their second goal of the game, with 30 seconds to play in the contest.
Freshman Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) tied the game at one, at 8:11 of the first an unassisted, shorthanded goal. Alain Frankiewicz (Houston, Texas) made it 2-1 Friars, scoring a power play goal, at 13:46, assisted by Jennifer Kranz (Waukesha, Wis.) and Kerstin Matthews (Westford, Mass.)
Valerie Bono (Woburn, Mass.) scored the lone second period goal, the eventual game-winner, on a slap shot form the blue line, assisted by Matthews and Butsch, at 12:59.
Junior forward Jessica Tabb (Holland, Mass.) netted the team's second power play goal of the day, at 7:42 of the third, assisted by Kim Mathias (Ballston Lake, N.Y.)
Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.) stopped 23 shots in goal, while Niagara's Crystal Foster saved 34 shots.
Providence record stands at 17-6-3 overall, 11-5-3 in the ECAC, the Purple Eagles drop to 16-9-2 overall, and 9-9-1 in the ECAC.
The Friars will return to action on Feb. 13, at Niagara University, at 3:00 p.m.
