Providence Women's Hockey Earns First Victory

The Providence College women's hockey team posted its first win of the season by defeating the University of Findlay, 4-2, on Friday, October 26 at Schneider Arena.

Sophomore defenseman Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) scored two third period goals to lift the Friars over the Oilers. The Friars trailed 2-1 going into the third period, when Halcisak weaved her way through the Oiler defense and tied the game at 2-2 at the 5:48 mark. At the 13:34 mark, Halcisak tallied the game winner off sophomore forward Danielle Culgin's (Framingham, Mass.) assist. Sophomore forward Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) added an empty net with 49 seconds remaining.

The Oilers held the a 1-0 lead after the first period on a goal by freshman forward Heidi Tallqvist (Turku, Finland). The Friars evened the scoring at 1-1 as junior forward Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) scored at the 12:42 mark of the second period. Four minutes later Findlay went ahead, 2-1, on a goal by freshman forward Melissa Nirva (Allen Park, Mich.).

PC outshot Findlay 42-15. Findlay's junior goaltender Erin Blair (Lisle, Ill.) made 38 saves, while PC's Amy Quinlan (Baton Rouge, La.) made 13 stops.

With the win, the Friars improved to 1-2, while the Oilers fell to 1-4.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday, October 27 at Schneider Arena for a 7:00 p.m start.
