The Providence College women's hockey team defeated Quinnipiac University,7-1, on Saturday, January 12 at the Northford Ice Pavilion in Northford, Conn.

The Friars opened the scoring at the 1:50 mark of the first period as sophomore Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) scored her third goal of the season for a 1-0 lead. Freshman Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) scored what proved to be game winner at the 6:49 mark of the second period. The Friars added three more goals in the period for a 5-0 lead. Quinnipiac made the score, 5-1, as Ashley Berglund scored at the 18:52 mark of the second period.

Seven Friars posted two or more points led by Halcisak who tallied one goal and three assists for four points. Freshman Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) scored one goal and two assists, while junior Melanie Ruzzi (Burnsville, Minn.) also added one goal and two assists. Senior Jackie Tamsin, a native Branford, Conn., posted one goal and one assist.

PC outshot Quinnipiac, 56-5. Quinnipiac's Mel Courtmanche made 49 saves, while PC's Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) needed to make only four stops.

With the win, the Friars improved to 7-8-3 overall and 4-4-2 in ECAC Eastern League play, while Quinnipiac dropped to 3-13-0, 0-9-0 in league play.

The Friars are back in action on Wednesday, January 16 as they host Boston College at PC's Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
