The Providence College women's hockey team defeated Boston College,5-1, on Wednesday, January 16 at Schneider Arena.
The Friars jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) at the 15:43 mark of the first period. PC increased its lead to 2-0 as sophomore defenseman Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) tallied her fourth goal of the season. Halcisak, who had just jumped onto the ice after serving a two minute minor for interference, intercepted a pass from a BC defender at the blue line, skated in alone against freshman goaltender Lisa Davis (Falmouth, Mass.) and fired a shot past Davis at the 18:33 mark of the opening period.
Halcisak struck again at the 9:25 mark of the second period as she tucked in a rebound off a Davis save for a 3-0. Freshman Carrie Holldorf (Glenwood City, Wis.) was credited with the assist. The Eagles cut the lead to, 3-1, when senior Kelly McManus (Dedham, Mass.) scored on a two-player advantage. Senior captain Kim Mathias (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) increased PC's lead to, 4-1, as her slap shot from the just inside the blue line found the net five minutes into the third period. Freshman Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) capped off the scoring at 16:43 of the final period with her second tally of the season.
PC outshot Boston College, 31-12. Davis made 26 saves for the Eagles in the loss, while PC's Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) stopped 11 shots.
With the win, the Friars improved to 8-8-3 overall and 5-4-2 in ECAC Eastern League play. The Friars are unbeaten in their last four games. Boston College fell to 3-11-3, 1-9-2 in league play.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, January 19 as they host St. Cloud State University at PC's Schneider Arena at 2:00 p.m.
