The Providence College women's hockey team defeated the University of Connecticut, 4-2, on Saturday, February 16 at the UConn Ice Arena.
The Friars and the Huskies battled through a scoreless first period with the Friars holding a 10-5 shot advantage. However, the Friars struck just 25 seconds into the second period on a goal by sophomore Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba). Stephenson received a pass from junior Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) and skated alone against UConn goaltender Shannon Murphy (Mapleville, R.I.) to give the Friars a 1-0 lead.

The power-play goal was assisted by sophomore Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Isle, Mich.) and junior Danielle Culgin (Framingham, Mass.). The Huskies cut the lead in half at the 14:16 mark as Kimberly Berry collected a rebounded off a save by PC's goaltender Amy Quinlan (Baton Rouge, La.) and scored on a wrist shot.
Freshman Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) scored two goals within a span of 1:48 in the third period to give PC a 4-1 lead. The Huskies cut the lead to 4-2 on an unassisted goal by Erika Spaeth, but PC held on for the win.
PC outshot UConn, 34-18. Murphy made 30 saves in the loss, while Quinlan stopped 16 shots in the win. The Friars improved to 15-11-3 overall and 9-5-2 in the ECAC Eastern League, while the Huskies fell to 11-16-2 overall and 7-9-1 in the league.
