The Providence College women's hockey team defeated Quinnipiac, 3-1, on Friday, February 8 at the Northford Ice Pavillion in Northford, Conn.

After a scoreless first period in which the Friars outshot Quinnipiac, 20-4, PC opened the scoring at the 2:20 mark of the second period as freshman Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) recorded her seventh goal of the season off an assist from freshman Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.). Junior Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) scored what proved to be the game winner at 11:58 to give the Friars a 2-0 lead. Quinnipiac cut the lead to 2-1 as Caitlin Peters scored an unassisted goal just 2:45 into the third period. Sophomore Sarah Youlen (Potsdam, N.Y.) gave the Friars a two-goal cushion as she tallied her fifth goal of the season for a 3-1 Friar lead. Youlen and Butsch finished with one goal and one assist each.

Providence outshot Quinnipiac, 56-9. Quinnipiac goaltender Mel Courtmanche made 53 saves, while sophomore Amy Quinlan (Baton Rouge) stopped eight shots in the win. The Friars improved to 13-10-3 overall and 7-5-2 in conference play, while Quinnipiac dropped to 3-19-1 overall and 0-15-0 in league play.

The Friars return to action as they host Quinnipiac on Saturday, February 9 at PC's SChneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
