PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College Head Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Coach Michelle Gacio announced the 2002 swimming and diving team awards and named captains for the 2002-03 season at the team's annual end-of-the-year banquet help Thursday, May 2nd.

Senior Lee Barnum (Hyde Park, N.Y.) was the recipient of the Cindi Luciani Award as the women's team MVP. Barnum capped her collegiate career by qualifying for the ECAC Championships and competing in the 100 and 200 meter fly on March 1-2. Barnum broke the one-minute mark in the 100 meter fly, finishing 18th with a time of 59.48. She finished 18th in the 200 fly the next day, completing the event in 2:10.89. The senior tri-captain led the PC women to a 4-3 overall record and a second-place finish at the Harold Anderson Invitational on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.

Sophomore Patrick Kavanagh (Newburgh, N.Y.) was the recipient of the Horace Bowden Award as the men's team MVP. Kavanagh was the top performer for the men, winning 10 individual events, finishing second seven times, finishing third three times and leading five relay teams to victory. Kavanagh completed his second season at Providence by being one the Friars most versatile swimmers. He competed in events from the 100 meter free and 100 meter fly to the 1,000 meter freestyle.

The David Hardy Coaches' Award was presented to seniors Lee Barnum, Allison Buckley (Chelmsford, Mass.), Keith Chobot (Randolph, N.J.), Lauren DeGray (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Nicole Mancini (Fall River, Mass.). The award is presented to a male and female swimmer who exhibits the qualities of loyalty, dedication, good sportsmanship and outstanding effort - both academically and athletically. Barnum Buckley and Manicini all served as captains of the women's team while DeGray provided an additional senior leader for the women's squad. Chobot was one of the men's team's tri-captain and he had a successful season as a senior.

Sophomores Bridget McKenna (Narragansett, R.I.) and Bryan Flynn (Middletown, R.I.) were named the Most Improved Female and Male swimmers, which honors those athletes who improve the most in their individual specialty. McKenna is presented with this award for the second-consecutive season, completing a successful season competing in the 800 meter freestyle. Flynn competed for the Providence men's team in the backstroke events.

The last award presentation was The Sears Diving Award, which was awarded to freshman diver Jamie Modon-Cohen (Yorktown, N.Y.).
