Carly Van Benten Records First Multi-Goal Game Of Her Career In 3-2 Victory Over Boston University

Charlotte Lorden scored one goal for the Friars and Piper Cline registered an assist.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team defeated Boston University, 3-2, in its home opener at Lennon Family Field on Aug. 30. Senior forward Carly van Benten netted two goals to pace the Friars' offense. It marked the first multi-goal game of her career at Providence. The Friars improved to 1-1 on the season, while BU also evened its record at 1-1.
1ST QUARTER:
• BU jumped on the board just 3:22 into the match as Lucy Johnson got behind the defense off a sideline feed near midfield from Alex Purcell.
• Providence and Boston University each recorded two shots in the opening quarter.
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence's Charlotte Lorden tied the game 2:37 into the second quarter as she caused a Boston University turnover and scored, unassisted.
• Johnson recorded her second goal of the day with 50 seconds remaining in the frame to put the Terriers ahead 2-1. Jenna Park fed the ball in from the right baseline and Johnson's effort deflected high into the air before dropping down behind Providence's goalkeeper.
• Just 23-seconds later, Van Benten scored an unassisted goal to level the game, 2-2.
• The match remained tied at halftime.
• Shots were tied , 5-5, at halftime. Each team recorded two penalty corners in the opening half.
3RD QUARTER:
• Van Benten was credited with the eventual game-winning goal just 1:16 into the third quarter, giving Providence a 3-2 advantage on the scoreboard.
• Piper Cline was awarded the assist on the play as she dished the ball to Van Benten at the right post for the deflection.
4TH QUARTER:
• The Friars maintained their one-goal advantage through the fourth quarter, outshooting the Terriers 7-0 in the final 15 minutes of regulation.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Van Benten recorded the first multi-goal game of her career in the victory. Last season, the forward registered a career-high five goals for the season.
• Sophomore goalkeeper Ava Porter earned the victory for Providence with three saves.
• Boston University goalkeeper Sophie Ortyl registered 10 saves on the day.
• The Friars have defeated the Terriers in back-to-back seasons. Last season, Providence posted a 3-2 win decided by a shootout at New Balance Field in Boston, Mass.
