PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated by Northeastern, 3-1, on Friday, January 31 in Hockey East action at Schneider Arena.
Despite holding a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal after 20 minutes of play, the Friars trailed, 1-0. Northeastern's Jason Guerriero netted his sixth goal of the season and the only tally of the first period when he collected a rebound off of Chuck Tomes' shot and wristed a shot past PC goaltender Bobby Goepfert just 42 seconds into the game.
Northeastern came out flying in the second period and scored two consecutive goals to take a 3-0 lead before the Friars got on the scoreboard with 4:33 remaining in the second period. Jared Mudryk scored the Huskies' second goal as a Friar defenseman tried to clear the puck from the crease and fired it off Mudryk's shin pad and the deflection went past Goepfert into the Friar net at the 1:43 mark. Northeastern got its final goal of the night on a power play tally by Eric Ortlip at 8:43. Nolan Schaefer replaced Goepfert in the Friar net after Ortlip's goal. PC's lone goal came in the final five minutes of the period on a shot by Devin Rask. Rask fired a wrist shot between Mike Gilhooly's pads.
Providence had several opportunities to score in the final period, including a five-on-three advantage, but the strong play of Gilhooly preserved the win for the Huskies. Gilhooly finished with 23 stops.
The Friars will return to action on Saturday, February 1 versus Massachusetts at Schneider Arena.
