Women's Basketball Defeated By Georgetown, 79-67

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Georgetown, 79-67, in BIG EAST Conference action on Wednesday, January 8 in Washington, D.C. Georgetown guard Mary Lisicky propelled the Hoyas to victory, scoring all of her 18 points in the second half. Lisicky nailed five-of-nine attempts from beyond the three-point arc and hit three-of-four free throws in the game. PC was led by sophomore guard Keisha Blackwell (Baltimore, Md.) who matched her career high with 14 points. Sophomore guard Michal Epstein (Rehovot, Israel) scored 13 points in the loss.
At halftime, the Friars held a 36-32 lead as Blackwell scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half of play, including a three-pointer with four seconds remaining in the half to give the Friars a four-point cushion. Epstein recorded seven points in the first half. As a team, PC shot 46.7 percent (14-30) from the floor in the first half, and 80.0 percent (4-5) from beyond the three-point arc. Georgetown shot 46.2 percent (12-26) from the floor in the first half, and were led by Rebekkah Brunson's 14 points. Brunson finished the night with a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds for the Hoyas.
Georgetown opened the second half on a 9-0 run to take a 41-36 lead and never looked back. The run was fueled by Lisicky who nailed two-straight three's to begin the half, followed by a Nok Duany field goal and free throw. PC sophomore forward Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, N.J.) stopped the run with a layup at the 17:14 mark. Simmonds finished the game with 11 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.) also reached double figures for the Friars with 10 points.
Providence (5-7, 0-2 BIG EAST) will travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to take on Pittsburgh in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, January 11. The game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and will be played in the Petersen Events Center.
