No. 4 Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Vermont, 5-1

The No. 4 Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Vermont, 5-1, on Saturday, October 18 at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt. The Friars opened the scoring in the first period when junior Emily Gryp (Lexington, Mass.) scored on a backhander from just outside the crease as she flipped the puck over the diving Vermont goaltender. Senior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) scored the second goal of the period for Providence as junior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and senior Sarah Youlen (Potsdam, N.Y.) were each credited with assists. The final goal of the period was scored after Zimmerman dug the puck out of the corner to Stephenson who found senior defenseman Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) cutting to the net. Halcisak fired the puck top-shelf stick side to beat the Catamount goalie. Vermont started the second period with a determined effort that paid off at the 8:37 mark as Lindsey Tilbury got them on the board with a power play goal. The Friars bounced back as Zimmerman scored a power play goal just five minutes later to extend the lead to three goals once again. Junior Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) scored the fifth and final goal of the game at the 3:24 mark of the third period. Providence outshot Vermont, 43-13. Sophomore goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) made 12 saves as the Friars start the season 1-0-0, while Vermont falls to 0-3-0. No. 4 Providence College returns to action on Sunday, October 19 when they travel to Canton, N.Y. to take on No. 7 St. Lawrence University at Appleton Arena at 2:00 p.m.
