The Providence College women's ice hockey team skated to a, 2-2, tie with St. Lawrence on October 19 at Appleton Arena in Canton, N.Y.
Senior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) opened the scoring late in the first period as she beat goaltender Rachel Barrie. Earning assists on the goal were sophomore Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.), her first point as a Friar, and junior Mara Amrhein (Waukesha, Wis.). Rebecca Russell scored for St. Lawrence in the second period to even the score at 1-1. Junior Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) put Providence back in the lead with just under four minutes to play in the second. Payton won a face-off in the offensive zone and powered her when to the net firing the puck top-shelf under the crossbar. The Friars were unable to hold on to the lead however and Chelsea Grills scored early in the third period on a breakaway to even the score. Neither team was able to generate much pressure in the overtime as they combined for three shots.
Sophomore Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) started the game in net for the Friars and made 28 saves as Providence outshot St. Lawrence, 41-30 The Friars and Saints move to 1-0-1 on the season.
Providence returns to action on Thursday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m. as they start the defense of their HOCKEY EAST title when they host Northeastern at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.
