The No. 5 Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Yale, 3-1, on Saturday, November 15 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.
The Friars got on the board first as junior Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) scored at the 8:26 mark of the second period as fellow junior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) made a tape to tape pass to earn an assist. Senior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) scored the second goal for Providence, which proved to be the game-winner on the power play. Sophomore Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) and senior Meredith Roth (Dubuque, Iowa) each earned an assist on the goal. Yale pulled within a goal, just 2:12 into the third period, when Deena Caplette was able to slip a rebound under sophomore goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland). The final goal was scored by senior defenseman Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) into an empty net with 13 seconds remaining in the game. Providence outshot Yale, 45-22. Bugden made 21 saves as the Friars improved to 2-2-2, while Yale fell to 2-2-1.
No. 5 Providence College returns to action on Sunday, November 16 when they travel to Princeton, N.J. to take on No. 10 Princton University at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink at 2:00 p.m.
