Women's Basketball Defeats Furman In Season Opener, 58-48

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Furman, 58-48, in non-conference action on Saturday, November 22 in Providence, R.I. Senior guard Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.) led all scorers with 19 points. Freshman forward Jill Furstenburg (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) registered 15 points, a game-high eight assists, five rebounds and one steal in her collegiate debut for the Friars.
The game marked the season opener for both teams, and PC improves to 22-8 all-time in season openers.
Providence led, 34-30, at halftime as Furstenburg netted 13 of her 15 points on the afternoon. For the game, Furstenburg connected on six-of-eight attempts from the floor, including two-of-two shooting from beyond the three-point arc, for a shooting percentage of .750.
The Friars led by as many as nine points (25-16) with 8:02 remaining in the first half, but the Lady Paladins went on a 14-9 scoring run to close out the half. As a team, Providence shot a blistering 57.1-percent from the field in the first half on 12-of-21 shooting.
In the second half, Providence held Furman to 18 points on six-of-23 shooting (26-1-percent) from the field. The Friars struggled from the floor in the second half as well, shooting just 29.6-percent (8-27), en route to 24 points in the half. PC held its largest lead of the game (13 points), 58-45, with 20-seconds remaining in the game. Furman out-rebounded Providence, 34-29.
Deshara Shealey led the Lady Paladins with 17 points, and added four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Orion Wake finished the game with a team-high eight rebounds and added seven points. Kim Lawrence collected a game-high five steals for Furman and added four points and five rebounds.
Aside from Quinn and Furstenburg, Providence got 11 points , five rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots from junior Gayle Nwafili (Maplewood, N.J.). Senior forward Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.) led Providence with a game-high nine rebounds. Freeburg also recorded four points, two steals and one assist.
The Friars will host Holy Cross in a non-conference game on Tuesday, November 25. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. and will be played at Alumni Hall's Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I.
