PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's cross country team remained No. 8 in the latest FinishLynx Division I Women's Cross Country Poll, which was released on November 4.
Providence received 292 points after finishing second at the BIG EAST Championship on Friday, October 31 at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. The Friars were led by juniors Kimberly Smith (Auckland, New Zealand) and Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland), who finished first and second, respectively. Smith's time of 20:01 set a BIG EAST course record in the event. Smith beat the previous course record set by Catherine Guiney of Boston College in 2001 by three seconds, as Guiney finished the championship that season in 20:04. She also became the sixth female runner in PC history to win the BIG EAST crown and the first since Sara Dupre won it in 1998
Stanford (387 points) kept its hold on the top spot with 10 of 13 first-place votes. Brigham Young (380 points), North Carolina (362 points), Notre Dame (345 points) and North Carolina State (341 points) round out the top five.
The Friars return to action on Saturday, November 15 at the NCAA Northeast Regional at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
