Friars Cross Country Teams Compete At The Friar Invitational

Women place first as Gabby Schmidt captures individual title and the men finish second.

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams competed in the annual Friar Invitational on Friday, Sept. 4 at the Mark Coogan Course at Highland Park in Attleboro, Mass. The Friar women scored 22 points and placed first overall for the sixth consecutive year. PC junior Gabby Schmidt (Brisbane, Australia) won the 4K race for the second consecutive year in a time of 13:53.1. The Friar men finished second with 53 points in the 6K race and were led by junior Cormac Dixon (Dublin, Ireland), who placed third overall in 18:10.9.

After Schmidt, juniors Anna Gardiner (Downpatrick, Ireland) and Emily Bush (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) finished second and third, respectively. Gardiner ran a time of 14:09.8, while Bush finished the four kilometers in 14:10.5. Sophomores Kate Currie (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Lucia West (Raleigh, N.C.) rounded out the scoring for PC. Currie placed seventh in 14:27.4, while West was ninth in 14:31.5.

In addition to Dixon, also finishing in the top-12 for the men's team were juniors Ryan LoCicero (Bloomfield, N.J.) and Daniel Prescott (Christchurch, New Zealand), who placed 10th (18:27.8) and 11th (18:29.6), respectively. Graduate student Jack Small (Kent, England) placed 12th overall in 18:30.9, while freshman David Hayes (East Greenwich, R.I.) rounded out the scoring in 17th (18:42.9).

The Friars will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 26 at the Princeton Meadows Challenge in Princeton, N.J.
