Women's Basketball Falls To Harvard, 73-59

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Harvard, 73-59, in non-conference action on Monday, December 22 in Providence, R.I. The Friars were led by junior point guard Keisha Blackwell (Baltimore, Md.), who scored 14 points and recorded three assists and two steals in the loss. Junior forward/center Gayle Nwafili (Maplewood, N.J.) chipped in eight points and a career-high 12 rebounds and seven steals in the effort.
In the first half, Harvard jumped out to a 7-0 lead over the first 1:39 of action. PC freshman Jill Furstenburg (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) halted the run at the 17:37 mark on a three-point basket to make the score, 7-3. The Crimson responded with another 7-0 scoring run to push their lead to 14-3 at the 15:27 mark. The Friars scored two-straight baskets to get within six points (14-8) with 13:45 remaining, but Harvard closed out the half on a 23-11 run to make the score 37-19 at the halftime break. The Friars shot just 27.6-percent (8-29) from the floor in the opening session, compared to the Crimsons' 48.5-percent shooting (16-33). The Crimson also out-rebounded the Friars in the first half, 26-14. Ten of Harvards 26 rebounds came off the offensive glass.
In the second half, Harvard extended it's lead to as 31 (60-29) with 11:20 remaining in the game as it outscored PC 23-10 through the first 8:40 of action. The Friars controlled the remainder of the game as they took off on a 30-13 scoring run, but Harvard's lead proved to be insurmountable with the score finalized at 73-59. The Friars shot 40.0-percent from the floor in the second half on 14-of-35 shooting, including 4-of-7 shooting from behind the three-point arc. PC outscored Harvard, 40-36, in the second half.
Harvard was led by Hana Peljto who recorded a double-double with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Reka Cserny added 25 points and eight rebounds. Tricia Tubridy pulled down 10 rebounds for Harvard in the winning effort.
Providence College (3-6) will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to partake in the La Salle Invitational on December 29-30. PC will face Bucknell on Monday, December 29 at 7:00 p.m. in Tom Gola Arena. The Friars' possible opponents for Tuesday, December 30 will be either La Salle or Coppin State in the consolation or championship game of the tournament. The consolation game will take place at 5:00 p.m. and the championship game is slated to follow at 7:00 p.m.
