The Providence College women's ice hockey team shutout Niagara University, 3-0, on Sunday, January 11 at Dwyer Arena in Niagara, NY.
After a scoreless first period the Friars were able to capitalize on two power play opportunities in the second as sophomore Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) made the score, 1-0, while senior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) made it 2-0 as she netted her 100th career point. In her first start of the season, junior goaltender Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) made 19 saves through two periods, including several key saves on a five on three penalty kill, to keep the Purple Eagles off the board.
The Friars extended their lead in the third period as sophomore Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season to make the score, 3-0. Providence continued to dominate the game as they outshot Niagara, 12-6. Thomas made six saves during the period and 25 on the night to post Providence's first shutout of the season.
Providence outshot Niagara, 39-25, as they improved to 5-8-2 overall on the season, while Allison Rutledge made 36 saves for the Purple Eagles as they fell to 2-13-3 overall.
Providence College returns to action on Friday, January 16 as they host the University of Connecticut in HOCKEY EAST action at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
