Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Connecticut, 5-3

The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated the University of Connecticut, 5-3, on Friday, January 16 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.

The Friars got on the board early as freshman Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored her first collegiate goal just three minutes into the game. Junior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) followed four minutes later with a goal of her own to make the score 2-0. At 9:41 into the first, senior Meredith Roth (Dubuque, Iowa) put in the Friars' third goal of the period. Connecticut answered back with a goal by junior Megan Mcleod (Livonia, Mich.) to close out the opening period scoring.

The second period was quiet until the 17:02 mark when Watrous scored her second goal, this one on the power play, followed shortly by Roth's second goal of the game to put the Friars up comfortably, 5-1, heading into the final period of play. The final stanza began well for Connecticut as the Huskies got goals from sophomore Janelle Armitage (Kinsella, Alberta) and senior Stefanie Snow (Bedford, NH) to get within two goals of Providence. That would be as close as the Huskies would get though as the Friars, behind junior goaltender Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas), held on for the victory. Thomas got her second victory in as many starts this season stopping 15 shots. Connecticut used two goalies, starter, sophomore Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) and junior Shannon Murphy (Mapleville, RI) who made 34 and six saves, respectively.

Providence College returns to action on Saturday, January 17 when they play the second-half of their home-and-home series with Connecticut in Storrs, Conn. at the UConn Ice Arena at 7:00 p.m.
